PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Randy Smothers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thaddeus Reese (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Reese's choice of entrance music: BAMA Boyz-Sweet Home Alabama. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Randy Smothers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thaddeus Reese!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Alan Glass and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smothers fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Smothers.
Smothers is trying hard to land a takedown here. Reese sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Randy Smothers. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Reese shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smothers but Smothers pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Smothers has his takedown stuffed

and Reese counters with a shoot takedown. Smothers fights it but they end up in guard.
Reese lands a couple of digs.
Reese throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smothers works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Smothers looking for a guillotine here but Reese defends easily.
Reese looking to sit in guard and control but Smothers gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Reese is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Reese tries to strike from the bottom.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Reese tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Smothers looking to pass the guard.

Smothers thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Smothers pushes down on Reese's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Reese is not content to let Smothers control the position.
Reese throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Smothers is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Reese doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Smothers.
Smothers is breathing heavily.
Smothers blocks the strikes from Reese.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Reese is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Reese counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Smothers working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Reese doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Reese manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Reese must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Reese wants to control from the top but Smothers keeps moving.

Reese postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smothers is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Reese, into his guard.
Smothers stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Reese swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smothers slips nicely into half guard.

Smothers seems to be looking for submissions.

Smothers seems to be working for a kimura but Reese defends the submission attempt.
Reese tries to roll over but Smothers keeps him under control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Reese is pressing down on Smothers's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Reese trying to strike off his back.

Reese is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Reese trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Reese looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smothers is one step ahead there.
Reese bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smothers's guard.

Smothers looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Reese is defending well. Smothers quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Reese has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Smothers celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Randy Smothers!
