Kovas kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Bankrobber by The Clash . Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Evgeni Novikov!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Illya Tyunina and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kovas fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Kovas lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.


It looks like Evgeni Novikov has been cut.
Kovas connects with a single shot there.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Novikov moves in looking to clinch but Kovas pushes him off.
Kovas digs a good hook to Novikov's body.
Novikov uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Kovas.

Novikov rushes Kovas and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Novikov lands a nice knee to the body.
Novikov has Kovas pressed against the cage, preventing Kovas from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Novikov pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Novikov has clasped his hands together around Kovas's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Novikov looks gassed!
Kovas manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Kovas is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Novikov pulls his head out easily.
Novikov is thwarting Kovas's attempts to control the position.
Kovas is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Novikov is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Novikov is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kovas tries to kick Novikov off but Novikov keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Kovas is trying to control but can't.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A big left from Kovas misses.
Kovas bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Novikov's head.
Novikov dodges the punch combination from Kovas.

Novikov closes the distance and clinches.
Novikov tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Kovas avoids it.
Novikov swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Come on Novikov - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Kovas wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Kovas's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Kovas tries to break free but Novikov pushes him back against the cage.
Novikov gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Kovas is trying to break the clinch but Novikov is controlling him.
Novikov lands a hook to the side of the head.
Novikov scores a nice knee to the body.

Novikov has clasped his hands together around Kovas's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Kovas gets back to half guard.

Novikov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Kovas slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Kovas looking for a guillotine here but Novikov defends easily.

Kovas is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Kovas working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Novikov doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Novikov manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Novikov throwing strikes but missing.

Novikov drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kovas looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kovas looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kovas!

Kovas decides to stand back up. Kovas steps back and let's Novikov get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kovas throws a jab when Novikov was well out of range.
Kovas getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Novikov tries to clinch there but Kovas circles away.
Kovas lands a jab-cross combination.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Kovas lands with a jab that stuns his opponent. Novikov is looking to close the distance but Kovas sees it coming and throws a beautiful knee! Novikov crumbles to the mat and that's all she wrote! Let's hope Novikov is OK because that was naaaaaasty!
