PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gino Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Varro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gino Sanchez looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gino Sanchez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jason Varro!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanchez shoots in for a takedown but Varro shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Varro keeps the fight on the outside.
Jason Varro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sanchez tries to keep at a distance but Varro has taken the fight into the clinch.
Sanchez wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Varro gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Varro connects with a nice short shot to Sanchez's temple.

Varro is looking to stall here but Sanchez recovers full guard.
Varro with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Varro controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Varro has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Sanchez is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Varro is aware though and is defending well.

Varro stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sanchez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Varro's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Sanchez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Varro defends well.
Varro is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Varro is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Varro gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Sanchez wants to clinch

and Varro counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Varro.
Sanchez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Sanchez tries to get out of the position.
Varro makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Varro is in close to Sanchez's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Varro is pushing down on Sanchez's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sanchez is fighting to maintain full guard but Varro has managed to sneak the leg through.

Varro takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Varro is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Varro works his foot free and advances to mount.
Sanchez wants to hold on but Varro pushes him away.
Varro can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sanchez is looking to escape.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Sanchez wants to control but Varro is having none of it.
Sanchez is squirming around, avoiding Varro's attempts to control the action.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Varro dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Gino Sanchez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jason Varro.

Sanchez is looking to stand up but Varro won't let him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sanchez is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Varro is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Varro has escaped and now he's on top!

Varro working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Sanchez wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Varro, who protects the arm well.
Varro throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gino Sanchez dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Sanchez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Varro is working away from the top position though.

Varro closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Sanchez looks like he's trying to stand up.
Varro wants to control but Sanchez is keeping him busy.

Jason Varro comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Varro has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
