PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tom Dwan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cassius Clay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Clay has chosen Austin Howard - Heaven Know as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tom Dwan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cassius Clay!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Clay throws a right and a left that Dwan avoids nicely.

Dwan shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Dwan looking to control but Clay is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Dwan sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Dwan misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Clay wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Dwan.
Clay is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Dwan thowing shots but they're missing.
Clay sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Dwan is controlling the pace.

Clay tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Dwan is stalling here. Clay is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Dwan seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Clay has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Dwan manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Dwan pushes Clay off looking to stand but Clay dives back in and keeps control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Dwan is staying active underneath Clay, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Clay is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Dwan!
Poor strikes thrown by Clay there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Clay is working for a guillotine from mount but Dwan frees his head quite easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Clay is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Dwan is just riding it out for now. Clay eventually gives up the hold.
Clay thows a huge punch but Dwan dodges it nicely.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Dwan is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Clay's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Clay's back!
Clay is trying to stand back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Dwan dominated that round.
That's time! Dwan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Dwan closes the distance and clinches.

Clay breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Clay lands a jab to the nose.
Dwan avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Dwan fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Clay sprawls well initially but Dwan persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Clay tries to roll over but Dwan keeps him under control.
Dwan is keen to just control but Clay is a slippery customer.

Dwan is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Clay defends it well.

Clay avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Dwan.
Clay blocking the ground and pound attempt from Dwan.
Dwan is thwarting Clay's attempts to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dwan wants to pass to mount but Clay is defending the position.
Clay wants to improve his position but Dwan is controlling well.

Clay ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Dwan moves away.
Tom Dwan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Clay throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Clay looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Clay misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Dwan is defended easily by Clay.
Clay misses with an uppercut.
Clay misses with a straight right.
Dwan misses with a jab, cross combination.

Dwan fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Clay sprawls well initially but Dwan persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Dwan trying to mount his opponent but Clay defends it.

Dwan is taking a breather. Clay says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Clay is refusing to be controlled, as Dwan sits in half guard.
Dwan is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Clay is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Dwan looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Dwan is working for an americana but Clay has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Dwan was thinking about the submission.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Dwan wants to pass the guard but Clay is keeping the position.
Dwan wants to control from the top but Clay keeps moving.
Clay is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Dwan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Clay swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Clay tries to land a sweep but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Dwan dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Clay lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Dwan circles away quickly and effectively.
Dwan moves away from the strike by Clay.
Dwan dodges the punch combination from Clay.

Clay gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Clay wants to sweep but no luck.
Clay is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Dwan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Clay swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Dwan drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Clay manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Dwan has Clay in his guard.

Dwan kicks Clay off and gets to his feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Dwan tries to clinch there but Clay circles away.

Dwan shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Clay tries to roll over but Dwan keeps him under control.
Dwan not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Dwan throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Dwan wants to take a breather but Clay is having none of it.
Dwan is really struggling to control Clay but he's trying to hold on to the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dwan throwing shots but Clay is blocking nicely.

Dwan decides to return to a standing position.
Clay throws a left and a right that both miss

and Dwan counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Clay!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Clay really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Clay is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Tom Dwan is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Clay is working to get back to half guard.
Dwan avoids the attempt from Clay to control.
Dwan takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cassius Clay has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Clay is trying desperately to improve position.
Dwan throwing strikes here but Clay is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Clay tries to reverse the position but Dwan maintains control.
Dwan looking to finish Clay with some ground and pound. This is bad for Clay!
Clay is desperately trying to improve his position but Dwan has a good base and remains in mount.

Clay defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Dwan.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tom Dwan showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Dwan, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
