PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rick Shepard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Keith Elam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Shepard might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Remedy. This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rick Shepard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Keith Elam!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Jorge Garcia and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Elam on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Shepard. Shepard obviously looking to wear him down.
Elam tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shepard sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Elam somewhat.
Shepard avoids the head kick by Elam.
Elam shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Elam tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shepard displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Elam.
Rick Shepard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Keith Elam.
Elam fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Shepard avoids it really well and circles away.
Rick Shepard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Elam counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Shepard wants to sweep but no luck.
Elam chips away with some ground and pound.
Elam scoring with punches to the head and body.
Elam looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Let's hope that Elam has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Elam works over Shepard with some ground and pound from guard.
Elam cracks Shepard with a solid left hand.
Elam showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Elam forces his way into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Shepard pushes Elam off looking to stand but Elam dives back in and keeps control.

Elam is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Shepard has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Elam is trying to control the action in half guard but Shepard is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Elam working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Elam performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Elam tries to pass to full mount but Shepard defends it.
Shepard is not content to let Elam control the position.
Elam is nestled in close to Shepard, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Elam is working for a submission of some sort.
Ground and pound from Elam.
Elam looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Nice strikes from Elam there.

Elam is taking a breather. Shepard says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Shepard knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Elam on the ground.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Keith Elam dominated that round.
That's time! Shepard's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Elam has his takedown stuffed

and Shepard counters with a nice double leg into side control. Elam won't be happy with that.
You can see the frustration on Elam's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Elam had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Shepard defends it easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Shepard got a little sloppy there for a moment and Elam has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shepard has managed to get both his arms back between Elam's legs - danger averted.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Elam striking off his back but it's not causing Shepard any problems.

Elam is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shepard is aware though and is defending well.
Elam is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Shepard has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Elam to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Shepard is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Elam pulls down on the head and he's put Shepard to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Keith Elam!
