PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vladimir Vodkakov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Wake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vladimir Vodkakov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jake Wake!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Illya Tyunina and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wake closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Wake lands in his opponent's guard.

Vodkakov working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Wake doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Wake manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Vodkakov will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Wake looking to sit in guard and control but Vodkakov gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Wake tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Vodkakov decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Wake, up you get!

Vodkakov fails with a takedown attempt.
Wake throws the kick towards the body but Vodkakov avoids it.
Vodkakov misses with a wild combination.
Vodkakov avoids the body shot from Wake.
Wake throws a combination that misses

and Vodkakov counters with a shoot takedown. Wake fights it but they end up in guard.
Wake working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Vodkakov.
Wake not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Vodkakov throws a big right hand that misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wake keeping moving, preventing Vodkakov from controlling successfully.
Vodkakov wanted to stand there but Wake had control of the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Wake gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Vodkakov counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wake is defended easily by Vodkakov.
Vodkakov keeps the fight on the outside.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Vodkakov misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Vodkakov clinches with his opponent.

Wake escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Vodkakov throws a sloppy head kick and Wake moves out of range easily.
No joy there for Vodkakov, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Vodkakov throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Wake.

and Wake counters with a good, hard body kick but Vodkakov shrugs it off.
Vodkakov is breathing heavily.
Wake wants to clinch
and Vodkakov counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Vodkakov throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Wake was covering up waiting for the punch and Vodkakov finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Wake tries to land a sweep but no joy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wake is adopting a defensive guard.
Vodkakov working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Wake punching from the bottom - just letting Vodkakov know he's still in a fight.
Vodkakov trying to control the position from guard on top but Wake is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Wake looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vladimir Vodkakov dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Vodkakov tries for a takedown but Wake circles away easily

and Wake counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Vodkakov is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Wake throws and elbow that misses. Vodkakov uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Wake's guard. Nice move by Vodkakov!
Wake is adopting a defensive guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Wake can do anything to dispel that myth.
Vodkakov postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Wake wants to sweep here but Vodkakov controlling him for the moment.

Vodkakov trying to control but Wake is working from the bottom.
Vodkakov won't allow Wake to sweep him here.
Vodkakov is looking to stand up but Wake won't let him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Wake will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Wake gets the takedown into side control.
Wake creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wake lands a decent elbow from side control.
An elbow from Wake crashes against the mat.
Vodkakov regains half guard.
Vodkakov trying to hold on to Wake's head to control him but Wake postures up.
Vodkakov is looking to improve his position.
Jake Wake has got the better of the ground game so far.

Vodkakov is in trouble now - Wake has advanced to mount!
Wake won't let Vodkakov get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Wake wants to control the pace but Vodkakov is squirming around nicely.
Wake scoring with strikes but Vodkakov is staying in there.
BOOM! Wake connects with a massive shot to the dome!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The referee warns Vodkakov that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Wake landing punches.
Wake can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Vodkakov is looking to escape.
Wake scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Vodkakov in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Wake landing strikes, looking to finish!
Wake connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Wake unloading with bombs!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Wake showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Wake has Vodkakov up against the cage in a clinch.
Wake has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Vodkakov is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Wake will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Vodkakov up against the cage.
Vodkakov tries to break the clinch but Wake is controlling the position.

Wake gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Vodkakov looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Vodkakov controls Wake momentarily but Wake frees himself.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Vodkakov is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Vodkakov escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Wake gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Wake scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Wake trying to control the position from guard on top but Vodkakov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vodkakov wants to stand and escape but Wake is having none of it.
Wake should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Wake passes Vodkakov's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Vodkakov is looking to improve his position.
Wake trying to control the pace.

Wake decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Wake closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Vodkakov is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Wake gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Wake has hold of one of Vodkakov's legs. Vodkakov is fighting the takedown attempt but Wake gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Wake tries to free his leg and advance position but Vodkakov is retaining full guard.

Vodkakov wants to sweep here but Wake controlling him for the moment.
Vodkakov has momentary wrist control but Wake slips an elbow through the middle.
Wake lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Wake postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Wake's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Wake prevents Vodkakov from getting back to his feet.
Wake trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Wake is looking to work some ground and pound but Vodkakov has wrist control.
Vodkakov trying to keep a closed guard but Wake is proving a slippery customer.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Wake pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Wake fails with the takedown
and Vodkakov connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Vodkakov tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wake swivels and escapes.
Wake lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Wake will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Vladimir Vodkakov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Wake.

Wake instigates a clinch.
Wake has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Vodkakov is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jake Wake comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wake has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
