PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Betts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Victor Torres (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Betts kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is England Belongs To Me. Ryan Betts had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Victor Torres!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Betts fails in his attempt to clinch.
Victor Torres seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Torres is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Betts's half guard.
Torres with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Torres prevents Betts from standing back up.
Torres seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Betts does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Torres looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Torres is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Betts!
Torres thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Betts is squirming around, avoiding Torres's attempts to control the action.

Torres with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Torres controlling from the full mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Torres wants to control the action but instead Betts gets a body lock and reverses into Torres's guard! Nice work!

Despite being in the dominant position, Victor Torres just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Betts shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
and Torres counters with a two punch combo.
Betts tries for a takedown but Torres circles away easily
and Torres counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Torres looks gassed!

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Betts shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Betts showed some decent athleticism there.
Betts prevents Torres from standing back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Betts is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Victor Torres dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Betts tries to clinch there but Torres circles away.
Betts stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Betts wants it to stay on the feet.

Torres gets the takedown into side control.
Betts is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Torres is controlling him well.
Torres is breathing heavily.
Torres creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Betts sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Betts wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Betts misses with a takedown attempt

and Torres counters with a nice double leg into side control. Betts won't be happy with that.

Betts explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
Some wild striking there from Torres.

Betts feints and as Torres raises his hands in defense, Betts changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Betts being controlled here momentarily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Betts trying to control the position from guard on top but Torres is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Torres looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Torres controls Betts momentarily but Betts frees himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Betts is stalling in the full guard.
Betts trying to control but Torres is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Victor Torres showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Betts has his takedown stuffed

and Torres moves into the clinch.
Torres is trying to drag Betts to the mat but Betts just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Betts stops a takedown attempt from Torres.

Torres turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Betts wants to get back to his feet but Torres drags him back down.
Betts prevents Torres from improving position.

Betts bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Betts shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Betts was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Torres is desperately trying to improve his position but Betts has a good base and remains in mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Torres can do anything to dispel that myth.

Betts is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Torres has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Betts is working for a guillotine from mount but Torres frees his head quite easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Torres tries to improve his position but Betts has taken his back! Betts has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Torres tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Betts pushes Torres away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
