PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Billy Carlson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carlson comes to the cage accompanied by My Block - Scarface. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Billy Carlson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Penn!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Penn darts in and clinches Carlson up against the cage.
Penn tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Carlson has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Penn is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Penn is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Carlson can't fight it off and eventually Penn manages to take the fight to the floor. Carlson looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Penn has gone for a leg lock! Carlson slips out almost immediately though and dives into Penn's guard.
Carlson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Penn looking to control.

Penn had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Carlson defends it easily.

Penn working for submissions but it's allowed Carlson to get to half guard.
Penn is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Carlson scores with a couple of nice shots.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn tries to roll over but Carlson keeps him under control.
Still in half guard, Carlson seems content to control.
Penn gets back to full guard.
Carlson controls from within his opponent's guard.

Penn is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Carlson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Carlson trying to control but Penn is working from the bottom.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Penn looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Carlson has picked Penn up and slammed him! Penn can't keep hold of the triangle and Carlson manages to pass to side control!
Carlson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Carlson has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Carlson pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Carlson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Carlson is going olschool here, as he tries to force Penn to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Penn shrugs it off.
Carlson controlling the pace for now.
Penn is trying to reverse the position but instead Carlson has taken his back - oops!
Carlson keeps control of the position as Penn tries to break free.
Penn turns into Carlson and is now in his guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn wants to control from the top but Carlson keeps moving.
Penn in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Penn looks gassed!
Penn looking to pass the guard.
Penn is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Carlson is trying to control the position but Penn postures up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Penn shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Carlson napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Carlson manages to work his way to half guard, despite Penn's best efforts.
Penn wants to pass to mount but Carlson is defending the position.
Carlson is trying to get back to full guard.

Penn is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Carlson is pressing down on Penn's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Penn must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Carlson is looking for a triangle but Penn pushes his legs off easily.

Penn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Carlson is controlling Penn's posture.
Penn is standing up over Carlson. Carlson looks to escape but Penn dives into side control.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Carlson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Carlson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Billy Carlson will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Penn shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Carlson is trying to defend but Penn finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Carlson throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Penn passes into side control, despite Carlson's attempt to control the position.
Penn trying to control the action but Carlson is working from the bottom.

Penn looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Carlson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Penn tries to pass the half guard into mount. Carlson knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Carlson gets back to full guard.
Pennis looking to pass into half guard but Carlson pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Carlson is in guard.

Penn is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Carlson wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.

Penn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Carlson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Carlson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Billy Carlson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Penn looking for a sweep. Not yet Penn, not yet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Carlson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Carlson trying to control but Penn is working from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Penn is on top in guard.
Penn forces his way into half guard.
Carlson has hold of Penn's hands but Penn slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Penn wants to pass the guard but Carlson is defending well.
Penn trying to control from half guard but Carlson is working away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Carlson is looking to control Penn's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Carlson avoid being mounted?
Penn throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Penn tries to pass to full mount but Carlson defends it.
Penn not landing any meaningful shots this time.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Penn shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Penn showed some decent athleticism there.

Carlson wants to get back to full guard.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Carlson defends it well.
The fighters are battling for position here. Carlson manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Penn is pushing down on Carlson's leg trying to pass to half guard. Carlson is fighting to maintain full guard but Penn has managed to sneak the leg through.

Carlson wants to control but Penn is having none of it.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Carlson fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Penn, pushing him back against the cage.
Penn tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Carlson smiles and moves away.

Penn darts in and clinches Carlson up against the cage.
Carlson tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Penn has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Carlson regains guard immediately.
Carlson is pulling down on Penn's head to control his posture.

Penn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Carlson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Penn, into his guard.

Penn throws his legs up looking for a submission but Carlson uses it to pass to side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn wants to get back to his feet but Carlson drags him back down.
Penn tries to improve position but can't.

Carlson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Penn is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Penn sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Carlson with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Penn tries to get to full guard but Carlson has control of the leg.
Carlson wants to take a breather but Penn is having none of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn manages to get to full guard.

Penn has his foot on Carlson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Carlson works his way back into a safe position though.
Penn tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Carlson got a little sloppy there for a moment and Penn has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Carlson has managed to get both his arms back between Penn's legs - danger averted.

Penn manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Penn lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Penn thowing shots but they're missing.
Penn unloads with some shots from mount but Carlson bucks and avoids them well.
Carlson is desperately trying to improve his position but Penn has a good base and remains in mount.
Carlson is working hard here to advance position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Carlson wants to hold on but Penn pushes him away.

Penn working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Penn jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Carlson manages to avoid the submission attempt.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Penn closes the distance but Carlson moves to the side

and Carlson counters by moving into the clinch.

Penn pulls guard effortlessly.
Carlson forces his way into half guard.
Carlson wants to pass the guard but Penn is defending well.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Frank Penn.
Well Penn has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards for a decision.
