PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Luiz Cane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Quick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Luiz Cane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mike Quick!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Alan Glass and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cane lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

Cane fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Quick sprawls well initially but Cane persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Cane is trying to control the action in half guard but Quick is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Quick wants to get back to full guard.
Quick is not content to let Cane control the position.
Cane wants to stand up but Quick is controlling the position.
Cane prevents Quick from improving his position.

Cane is working for a kimura but Quick is defending it quite comfortably.

Quick is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Cane pulls his head out easily.
Quick wants to improve his position but Cane is controlling well.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Cane feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Quick tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Cane trying to control the position from guard on top but Quick is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Quick looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Cane passes into half guard.
Quick tries to roll over but Cane keeps him under control.
Quick is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Cane's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Cane's back!

Quick patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
Quick is not going to allow Cane to sit and survive in this position.
Cane manages to reverse the position and now he's in Quick's guard. Nice work there by Cane.

Cane avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Quick looks gassed!
Cane trying to control but Quick is working from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Quick is on top in guard.
Cane throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Cane is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Cane works his way into side control.

Cane decides to stand up, so the ref orders Quick to his feet.

Cane closes the distance and clinches.
Cane holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Quick tries for a takedown. No joy.

Cane jumps guard.

Quick drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Cane dives on top into guard.
Cane trying to control but Quick is working from the bottom.
Quick looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Quick looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Quick throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Quick is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Cane is trying to stand.

Quick is trying to work for a kimura but Cane is defending well.
Cane tries to roll over but Quick keeps him under control.

Quick is looking for a kimura but Cane is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Quick to get the leverage.
Quick is pressing down on Cane's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cane is holding on for now.
Cane is trying to stand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Quick is working for a submission of some sort.
Cane is trying to maintain the position but Quick is very close to passing his half guard.
Cane is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Cane is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Quick is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Cane wants to control but Quick is keeping busy.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Quick tries for a takedown but Cane circles away easily

and Cane counters with a shoot takedown. Quick fights it but they end up in guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Cane thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Quick working for a triangle but Cane defends it easily.

Quick had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Cane is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Quick Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Cane's back instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Luiz Cane dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Quick fails with the takedown

and Cane counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Quick!

Cane working for a submission but Quick is keeping him at bay.
Quick wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Quick tries to roll but Cane sticks to his back.

Cane working for a choke but Quick is defending well.
Quick is trying to break free.

Quick is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Cane gets his way!
Cane could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cane connects with a big shot to the side of Quick's head.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Quick manages to reverse the position and now he's in Cane's guard. Nice work there by Quick.

Cane looking to hit a scissor sweep but Quick is one step ahead there.

Quick drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Cane manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Quick has Cane in his guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cane advances to half guard.
Quick moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Quick manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Quick working for a guillotine from mount but Cane is in no mood to give up.

Quick goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Cane turns into him and now he's in Quick's guard.
Cane works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Quick wants to get back to full guard but Cane has mounted him!
Cane wants to control the pace but Quick is squirming around nicely.
Cane with shots to the head and body - Quick looks very uncomfortable down there.
Quick is looking to improve his position but Cane isn't that keen on the idea.

Cane has hold of Quick's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Quick manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Cane gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Quick has his takedown stuffed

and Cane counters with a nice double leg into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

Cane decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Luiz Cane is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Cane gets a takedown into half guard.

Cane is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Quick defends it well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Quick tries to get to full guard but Cane has control of the leg.
Quick makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Quick.
Cane wants to pass the guard but Quick is keeping the position.
Cane won't allow Quick to sweep him here.
Cane wants to control from the top but Quick keeps moving.

Cane drops back looking for a leg! Quick is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Quick manages to kick Cane off! Cane jumps back into Quick's guard.
Quick keeping moving, preventing Cane from controlling successfully.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Cane looking to pass the guard.

Quick working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cane doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cane manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Cane is posturing up here but Quick has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Cane tries to roll out but it's too tight and Cane has to tap! Slick submission there by Quick!
