PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tom Mountain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Tom Mountain has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Tom Mountain seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tom Mountain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Mir!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Robert Twigg and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice body kick there by Mir.
Mir looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Mir throws a sloppy head kick and Mountain moves out of range easily.
Mir tries to clinch up.
Mir tries to clinch up but Mountain circles away and keeps his distance.
Mir moves out of range as Mountain strikes.
Frank Mir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mountain with a poor takedown

and Mir counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mountain won't be happy with that.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Mountain is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Mir working the body and head with strikes.
Mir wants to control but Mountain is keeping him busy.
Mir working the ground and pound but Mountain is defending the strikes.

Mir has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Mir scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Mountain tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mir wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Mir wants to control but Mountain is keeping him busy.
Mountain is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Mountain parries the strikes from Mir easily there. Mir is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Mountain to escape.
Mountain is not content to let Mir control the position.
Mir lands an elbow.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mountain is looking for a sweep.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Mountain misses with a takedown attempt

and Mir counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mir distracts Mountain with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Mir avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Mir got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mountain has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mir has managed to get both his arms back between Mountain's legs - danger averted.
Mountain is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Mountain keeping moving, preventing Mir from controlling successfully.

Mir stands up from Mountain's guard - Mir perhaps looking for a knockout.

Mir shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Mountain is looking to improve his position but Mir isn't that keen on the idea.
Mountain is squirming around, avoiding Mir's attempts to control the action.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mountain is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Mir has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Mountain is working hard here to advance position.
Mir breaks from Mountain's wrist control and lands an elbow.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Mountain tries to hold on but Mir postures up.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Mir is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Mountain can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Mountain is wriggling around trying to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Frank Mir dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Mountain decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Mir trying to control but Mountain postures up.

Mountain is trying to work for a kimura but Mir is defending well.
Mir is refusing to be controlled, as Mountain sits in half guard.
Mir is trying to maintain the position but Mountain is very close to passing his half guard.
Mountain is trying to control the action in half guard but Mir is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Mountain is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Mountain seems to be working for a kimura but Mir defends the submission attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mir gets full guard.
Mir controls Mountain momentarily but Mountain frees himself.
Mir is pulling down on Mountain's head. It's preventing any offense from Mountain, at least for the moment.

Mountain drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mountain jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Mir manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mountain manages to get himself to full guard.
Mountain wants to improve his position but instead Mir has moved into half guard.
Mir tries to pass to full mount but Mountain defends it.

Mir working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Mir is looking to advance position but Mountain won't allow it.
Mountain works his way to full guard. Good work.
Mir postures up.
Mountain is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Mountain prevents Mir from standing back up.
Mountain is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Mountain drops back, looking for a kneebar! Mir looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Mir looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Mir!

Mountain is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Mir off and has taken his back!

You can see the frustration on Mir's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Mir is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Mountain is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Mir knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Mir for a finish.
Mir prevents Mountain from getting a body triangle.

Mountain has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Mountain has the hooks in. Mir is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Mountain dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

and Mir counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mountain won't be happy with that.
Mountain is trying to control Mir's posture but Mir avoids it.
Mountain manages to get back to half guard.
Mountain is staying active underneath Mir, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Mountain is looking to improve his position.
Mir is trying to control the action in half guard but Mountain is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Mountain is looking for a sweep. Mir is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Mir thows a huge punch but Mountain dodges it nicely.

Mir is trying hard to land a takedown here. Mountain sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

and Mir counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mountain not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Mountain wants to improve his position but instead Mir has moved into half guard.
Mir throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Mountain is pressing down on Mir's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Mountain wants to sweep here but Mir controlling him for the moment.

Mountain has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mir can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Mountain is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mir wants to control from the top but Mountain keeps moving.

Mir stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mountain swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mountain can't keep his opponent in guard - Mir advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Mountain is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mir pulls his head out easily.
Mountain wants to improve his position but Mir is controlling well.
Mir wants to pass to mount but Mountain is defending the position.
Mountain is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mir's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mir's back!

Mountain working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

Mir tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Mountain avoids the attempt from Mir to control.
Mountain pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.
Mir keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Mountain with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Mountain goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Mir is on top in guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frank Mir comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mir has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
