PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Guy Smiley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Vasa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Guy Smiley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick Vasa!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Donatello Bradman and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smiley closes the distance and pushes Vasa back into the cage.
Vasa tries for a takedown but Smiley manages to get underhooks.
Smiley tries to pull guard but Vasa won't allow it.

Smiley ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Smiley no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Smiley throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Smiley is pulling down on Vasa's head to control his posture.

Smiley had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Vasa is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Smiley Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Vasa's back instead.

Vasa tries to escape but Smiley has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Smiley gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.
Vasa trying to control the hands but Smiley won't let him.

Smiley is riding his opponent, not letting Vasa buck him off.
Smiley will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Vasa wants to escape the position.

Smiley working for the choke.
Smiley lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.
Can Vasa hold on?! Smiley is landing more strikes to his hapless foe.
Vasa manages to reverse the position and now he's in Smiley's guard. Nice work there by Vasa.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smiley preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Vasa pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smiley is keeping the position for now.

Smiley throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Vasa decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Smiley changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Vasa tries to avoid it but Smiley manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Vasa to the ground. Vasa escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Smiley moves into the clinch successfully.
Smiley tries to pull guard but Vasa won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Guy Smiley. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Smiley manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Smiley has his feet on Vasa's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Smiley is breathing heavily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Smiley can't break the clinch.
Smiley wants a takedown but no success here.
Vasa tries for a takedown but Smiley manages to get underhooks.
Vasa is trying to stall.

Smiley pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Smiley stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Vasa.
Vasa wants to clinch but Smiley slips to the side
and Smiley counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Vasa rushes Smiley and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Vasa is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Smiley fails to pull guard.
Smiley wants to break the clinch but can't.
Vasa tries to stall but Smiley uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Smiley breaks from the clinch.
Smiley wants to clinch.

Smiley shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Vasa has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smiley is working away from the top position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Guy Smiley dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Vasa tries to clinch but Smiley is having none of it.
Guy Smiley is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Vasa shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smiley but Smiley pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Vasa tries to clinch up.
Smiley with a poor takedown
and Vasa connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Vasa misses with a two punch combination.
Smiley throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Vasa counters with a nice double leg into side control. Smiley won't be happy with that.
Vasa misses with the ground and pound.
Smiley is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Vasa is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Vasa won't let Smiley get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smiley tries to hold on but Vasa postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smiley is in all sorts of trouble here.
Vasa looking to control but Smiley is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Vasa sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Vasa thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Vasa punishing his opponent with strikes.
Vasa looking to control but Smiley is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Smiley working to try and regain half guard.
Vasa trying to control but Smiley is having none of it.
Vasa looking to ground and pound but Smiley is blocking nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smiley is squirming around, avoiding Vasa's attempts to control the action.
Vasa prevents Smiley from getting the reversal.
Vasa tries to control but Smiley wriggling away.
Smiley tries to reverse the position but Vasa maintains control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smiley avoids a series of strikes thrown by Vasa.
Vasa throws a wild left hand from mount and Smiley manages to wriggle his way back to half guard.
Vasa is keen to just control but Smiley is a slippery customer.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smiley misses with a few strikes there.
Smiley avoids a punch combination nicely.

Smiley looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Vasa!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smiley avoids the attempt from Vasa to control.
Smiley looking to control and managing it successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nick Vasa showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Smiley's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Vasa tries to close the distance and clinch but Smiley swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Vasa throws a left and a right that both miss

and Smiley counters with a single leg into guard. Vasa didn't expect that.
Smiley won't allow Vasa to get back to his feet.
Smiley has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Smiley postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Vasa is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Smiley, into his guard.

Smiley kicks Vasa off and gets to his feet.

Smiley closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Vasa gets back to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smiley gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Vasa gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Vasa is looking for a triangle but Smiley pushes his legs off easily.
Smiley trying to control the position from guard on top but Vasa is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vasa being controlled here, momentarily.

Vasa not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Smiley looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Vasa is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Smiley scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Vasa is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Vasa wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Smiley drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smiley postures up.
Smiley sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vasa's guard.

Smiley is trying to work for a kimura but Vasa is defending well.

Smiley is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Vasa wants to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Still in half guard, Smiley seems content to control.
Smiley wants to control but Vasa is keeping him busy.

And that's the end of the fight!
Guy Smiley showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Smiley has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
