PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Wanderlei Merriweather (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andy Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Merriweather comes to the cage accompanied by Change. Mir is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: New World Order. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wanderlei Merriweather!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Andy Mir!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Merriweather throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mir's waist but Mir gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Merriweather off to one side.
Mir looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Mir shoots in and bounces Merriweather off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Merriweather is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Merriweather is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Merriweather throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Mir is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Merriweather is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Merriweather has escaped and now he's on top!

Merriweather wants to stand but Mir is controlling his arm.
Merriweather is looking to take a break and control but Mir is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Merriweather looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Mir tries to bench press Merriweather off him but Merriweather keeps the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mir wants to control but Merriweather postures up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mir is trying to improve his position.
Mir tries to contro but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
Mir is wriggling around trying to escape.
Merriweather with good strikes from the mount here!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Merriweather cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Mir tries to reverse the position but Merriweather maintains control.

Merriweather jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Mir manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Mir is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Merriweather scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Mir to see if he's OK.

Mir tries to buck Merriweather off but Merriweather is having none of it.

Merriweather is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Mir can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Merriweather wants to finish this one by submission but Mir is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Merriweather.

Merriweather can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mir is looking to escape.

Merriweather with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Mir wants to control but Merriweather is having none of it.
Merriweather is looking to stand but Merriweather has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Merriweather with a poor takedown

and Mir counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mir.
Merriweather has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mir trying to control but Merriweather is working from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Merriweather is on top in guard.
Mir looking for a sweep. Not yet Mir, not yet.
Merriweather lands a couple of elbows.
Mir controls Merriweather momentarily but Merriweather frees himself.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Mir bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Merriweather keeps working.

Mir wants to control but Merriweather is keeping him busy.
Mir tries to advance position but instead Merriweather slips a leg back in to half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Merriweather is trying to stand back up but Mir is controlling him

Still in half guard, Mir seems content to control.
Mir not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mir on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Merriweather. Merriweather obviously looking to wear him down.
Mir shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

Merriweather digs a good hook to Mir's body.

Mir feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Merriweather fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mir sprawls well initially but Merriweather persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Mir is trying to hold Merriweather in close to prevent damage but Merriweather has managed to pass into half guard.

and Mir counters with a nice double leg into side control. Merriweather won't be happy with that.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Merriweather is looking to regain half guard here but Mir keeps moving and retains side control.
Merriweather is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Mir off and has taken his back!

Andy Mir showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Merriweather's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!



Merriweather feints and as Mir raises his hands in defense, Merriweather changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Merriweather pushes down on Mir's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Merriweather not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Merriweather wants to free his trapped foot but Mir is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Merriweather throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

and Mir counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Merriweather tries to kick Mir off but Mir keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Mir perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Mir moves into full mount! Merriweather won't be happy about that!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mir might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Merriweather kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Merriweather slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Mir gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Mir is controlling Merriweather's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Merriweather tries to pass the half guard into mount. Mir knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Merriweather is keen to just control but Mir is a slippery customer.
Merriweather prevents Mir from improving his position.
Mir misses with some strikes from the bottom.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mir flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Merriweather passes to side control.
Mir struggling a bit here.
Mir keeping his opponent close.

Merriweather tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Merriweather landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.


Mir is rocked!
Mir is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Merriweather is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Wanderlei Merriweather showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Merriweather has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
