PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Terry Bull (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Layne Staley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bull comes into the arena with The Last Shadow Puppets blaring out of the sound system. Staley has chosen Alice in Chains - No Excuses as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Terry Bull!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Layne Staley!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, James Ackerman and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bull lands a jab.
A big left from Bull misses.
Staley missing with a left hand there. Bull was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Bull moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
A left lands for Bull.
Bull lands a glancing blow to the side of Staley's head.
Bull throws out a powerful jab.
Staley blocks a low kick nicely.
Staley looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Bull cracks Staley with a good jab.
Terry Bull seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A big left from Staley misses.
Staley fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Bull throws a sloppy head kick and Staley moves out of range easily.
Bull wants to clinch up but Staley keeps it at a distance.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bull cracks Staley with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Bull misses the jab.
Staley walks into a jab.
Staley on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Bull misses with a wild combination.
Staley looks to land a left hand but Bull moved out of range nicely.
Bull throws a lazy right hand but Staley sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Bull throws a right and a left that both miss.
Bull thows a body shot but no joy.
Staley takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Staley takes one on the chin but keeps coming.


It looks like Layne Staley has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A combination from Bull does no damage.
Staley swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bull throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Staley throws a jab but it's blocked by Bull.
Bull throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Staley counters with a nice double leg into side control. Bull won't be happy with that.
Bull tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Staley wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Staley working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Bull regains half guard.
Bull manages to get to full guard.

Bull controlling the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Staley trying to control the position from guard on top but Bull is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Staley content to stall in guard here.
Bull is trying to keep Staley in close.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Staley advances to half guard.
Staley passes to side control.
Staley tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Bull tries to improve position but can't.
Bull wants to control but Staley postures up.
Bull tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Staley presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Staley goes for an armbar but Bull turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Bull.
Bull has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Bull stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Staley swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Staley takes a body punch but keeps moving.
A combination from Bull does no damage.
Staley displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Bull throws out the jab.
Bull digs a good body shot into Staley's ribs.
Staley blocks a jab.
No joy there for Staley, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Bull showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Staley.
Terry Bull is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Staley takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Staley moves away from the strike by Bull.
Nice jab there from Bull.

Bull darts in and clinches Staley up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bull stops a takedown attempt from Staley.
Bull misses with an elbow over the top.
Staley has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Bull is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Staley drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Bull gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Terry Bull has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Layne Staley.
Bull is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Staley takes a knee to the side of the body.
Staley is breathing heavily.
Bull scores a nice knee to the body.
Staley takes a knee right on the jaw!
Bull gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Bull is struggling to control the position.
Bull with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Bull tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Staley avoids it.
Staley is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Bull pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Bull is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Bull tries to land knees in the clinch but Staley avoids the damage to the body.
Bull lands with a light punch inside.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Bull lands a damaging elbow.
Bull throws a head punch that misses.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Bull here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Staley drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Bull is leaning against Staley and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Bull tries to land a knee to the head but Staley blocks with his arms.
Bull putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Staley in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Bull connects with a knee to the head.
Staley has Bull pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Bull manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Bull pushes Staley back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

A head punch blocked on the inside by Staley.
Bull is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Staley is keeping busy.
Bull misses with a knee strike.

Staley turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Staley manages to end up in side control.
The ground and pound from Staley seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Bull tries to bench press Staley off him but Staley keeps the position.

Staley tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Staley has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Bull sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bull pushes Staley off looking to stand but Staley dives back in and keeps control.

Staley is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Well, if Staley is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bull wants to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

and Staley counters with a left to the body.

Bull looks to land a right hand but Staley moved out of range.
Staley circles away from the clinch attempt
and Staley counters with a right hand to the body.
Staley thuds a left hand into Bull's body.
Staley dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Staley lands with a nice combination. Bull backs away looking to recover.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Bull is rocked!

Staley in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Bull is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
