PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joe Gray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alvin Rocker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rocker has chosen Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Gray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alvin Rocker!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Jorge Garcia and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rocker throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gray defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Rocker.
Gray throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rocker's waist but Rocker gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gray off to one side.
Rocker misses with an uppercut. Gray saw that one coming.
Rocker doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Gray counters with a takedown into side control.
You can see the frustration on Rocker's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The ground and pound from Gray seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Gray wants to stand but Rocker has his arm trapped.
Rocker misses with an elbow from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rocker tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gray wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rocker scores with a one two! Gray had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.


It looks like Joe Gray has been cut.

Rocker goes for an armbar but Gray turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Gray.
Rocker not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Gray passes into half guard.
Rocker has his hands clasped together around Gray's back. He's all about the action.

Gray wants to free his trapped foot but Rocker is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Rocker is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Gray's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Gray's back!

Rocker wants to sweep but no luck.
Gray throws a strike but Rocker rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Rocker tries to free his leg and advance position but Gray is retaining full guard.

Gray working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rocker doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rocker manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Rocker throws a right and a left that Gray avoids nicely.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Nice straight punches there by Rocker. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Rocker.
Gray looks to land a combination but Rocker avoids it well.
Rocker tries to close the distance and clinch but Gray swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Rocker will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Alvin Rocker seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rocker gets the takedown into side control.
Gray is pushing Rocker's head away, looking to escape. Rocker manages to hold on to the position though.

Rocker is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gray is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Gray is looking to regain half guard here but Rocker keeps moving and retains side control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Gray jumps guard and drags Rocker to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gray is on top in guard.

Gray is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rocker is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rocker has escaped and now he's on top!

Gray drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Rocker can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gray controls the pace.

Gray is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rocker is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Gray tries to score a power double leg takedown but Rocker sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gray somewhat.

and Gray counters with a nice body kick.
Gray shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rocker pinned against the cage. Rocker gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

The fight stays on the outside here - Gray looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Gray throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Rocker swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Gray is now in Rocker's guard. A big mistake from Rocker there, giving up the dominant position!
Gray wants to get up but he can't break Rocker's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Rocker is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Gray has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Rocker is proving hard to escape from.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Gray throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rocker was covering up waiting for the punch and Gray finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Gray drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rocker looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rocker looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rocker!

Rocker fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Rocker lands a heavy elbow.
Rocker scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Alvin Rocker has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rocker looking to control and managing it successfully.

Gray is squirming around, avoiding Rocker's attempts to control the action.
Gray is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Rocker moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Gray has worked his arm free - good work by Gray!
Rocker trying to control the action but Gray is working from the bottom.
Rocker tries to move to full mount but Gray actually manages to regain half guard.
Rocker misses with a head shot. Gray uses the momentum to regain guard.
Rocker stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gray swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Joe Gray.
I think Gray has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
