PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Borat Obama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Svern Ferrus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Borat Obama!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Svern Ferrus!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Sergei Dronov and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ferrus throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Ferrus misses with the combination.

Ferrus gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Ferrus working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Obama.
Obama trying to control but Ferrus is working from the bottom.

Ferrus looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Obama passes into half guard.

Ferrus looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Ferrus wants to control but Obama is keeping busy.
Obama sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Ferrus defending well though.
Ferrus is looking to improve his position.
Obama is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Ferrus tries to hold on but Obama postures up.

Ferrus is desperately trying to improve his position but Obama has a good base and remains in mount.
Obama unloads with some shots from mount but Ferrus bucks and avoids them well.

Obama has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Ferrus is trying to escape the mount but Obama keeps good control and instead manages to take Ferrus's back.

Ferrus rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Ferrus tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Ferrus gets back to full guard.

Ferrus is looking for a triangle but Obama pushes his legs off easily.
Obama slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Obama throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Obama stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Ferrus misses the jab.

Ferrus feints and as Obama raises his hands in defense, Ferrus changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Obama looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Ferrus drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ferrus jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Ferrus looks gassed!
Obama utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Obama is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Obama throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Obama working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ferrus doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ferrus manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Obama is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Ferrus is trying to get back to full guard.
Obama throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Obama is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Obama pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ferrus is keeping the position for now.
Ferrus trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Ferrus is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Obama defends well.

Ferrus has his foot on Obama's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Obama works his way back into a safe position though.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Borat Obama dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Obama walks into a jab.
Obama avoids a punch combination nicely.
Ferrus throws a right and a left that Obama avoids nicely.
Obama throws a sloppy head kick and Ferrus moves out of range easily.
Ferrus ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Obama moves away.
A jab from Ferrus misses.
A punch combination from Obama misses.
Obama tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Ferrus paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Obama throws a shot from downtown. Ferrus moves away and avoids it.

Ferrus takes the fight into the clinch.

Obama breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ferrus lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
A right-left combo lands from Ferrus.
Obama avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Obama has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Obama tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ferrus swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Obama fails with the takedown.
Borat Obama is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Ferrus showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Obama.
Ferrus tries to close the distance and clinch up but Obama swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Ferrus throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Obama was covering up waiting for the punch and Ferrus finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Ferrus wants to control from the top but Obama keeps moving.

Obama escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Ferrus gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Obama preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Ferrus got a little sloppy there for a moment and Obama has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ferrus has managed to get both his arms back between Obama's legs - danger averted.
Ferrus stands and throws Obama's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Ferrus thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Ferrus is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Ferrus goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Obama rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Ferrus's guard! Nice work there by Obama!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Obama wants to control from the top but Ferrus keeps moving.

Obama gets to his feet. Ferrus looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Obama fails with the takedown

and Ferrus counters with a single leg into guard. Obama didn't expect that.

Ferrus drops back, looking for a kneebar! Obama looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Obama looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Obama!
Ferrus isn't going anywhere.
Ferrus struggling a bit here.
Ferrus misses with a strike from the bottom.
Ferrus is looking for a sweep.
Obama creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Ferrus sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Obama has knee on belly momentarily but Ferrus bucks him off and regains half guard.
Obama thows a huge punch but Ferrus dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ferrus tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Ferrus with a jab.
Obama keeps the fight on the outside.
Ferrus throws a right hand that Obama ducks under and follows up with a left that Obama also avoids with ease.

and Ferrus counters with a nice double leg into side control. Obama won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Borat Obama. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Obama is trying to get back to half guard.
Ferrus lands some shots froms side control.

Ferrus wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Obama, who protects the arm well.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Obama manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Obama wants to control but Ferrus is keeping busy.
Obama is not content to let Ferrus control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Svern Ferrus showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Obama is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ferrus sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Ferrus feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Obama is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ferrus is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Obama reverses the position - he's now on top in Ferrus's guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Obama trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Ferrus had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Obama is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Ferrus Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Obama's back instead.
Obama trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Ferrus throwing strikes from the back - he gets a warning from the referee for striking the back of the head but all these shots are hurting Obama!
Obama wants to escape the position.

Ferrus is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Obama has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Obama is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Obama wants to control his opponent's hands but Ferrus gets his hands free.
Obama prevents Ferrus from getting a body triangle.
Obama is trying to break free.
Ferrus is landing with strikes from the back.
Ferrus scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.

Obama tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Obama is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Ferrus wants to control the pace but Obama is squirming around nicely.

Ferrus is going olschool here, as he tries to force Obama to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Obama shrugs it off.

Ferrus tries to control but Obama wriggling away.

Obama tries to lock up and control but Ferrus gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Obama is looking for a sweep. Ferrus is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Ferrus working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Ferrus is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Obama has managed to free his arm - good work.
Obama is looking for a sweep. Ferrus is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Obama is staying active underneath Ferrus, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Obama regains full guard. Nicely done.

Obama is looking for a triangle but Ferrus pushes his legs off easily.

Svern Ferrus comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Ferrus has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
