PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Michael Blackson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gregor Vandenhoff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Blackson comes into the arena with Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy blaring out of the sound system. Vandenhoff is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Du Hast. Gregor Vandenhoff will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Blackson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gregor Vandenhoff!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Eddie Farnsworth and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vandenhoff shoots in for a double leg but Blackson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Vandenhoff throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Blackson's waist but Blackson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vandenhoff off to one side.
Vandenhoff looks gassed!
Blackson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Blackson gets a clinch.
Blackson lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Blackson has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Vandenhoff clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Blackson biding his time, controlling Vandenhoff.

Blackson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Vandenhoff for as long as he can get away with.
Blackson lands with a nice looking elbow that stuns Vandenhoff.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Blackson really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Vandenhoff.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Michael Blackson just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Blackson looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Blackson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Blackson drops back looking for a leg! Vandenhoff is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Vandenhoff manages to kick Blackson off! Blackson jumps back into Vandenhoff's guard.
Blackson pushes down on Vandenhoff's leg and manages to get into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Blackson manages to break the clinch.
Vandenhoff wants to clinch

and Blackson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Vandenhoff's guard.
Vandenhoff keeping moving, preventing Blackson from controlling successfully.
Vandenhoff can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Blackson controls the pace.

Blackson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Vandenhoff is breathing heavily.

Vandenhoff working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Blackson.
Blackson trying to control but Vandenhoff is working from the bottom.

Blackson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Blackson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Blackson in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Blackson postures up in Vandenhoff's guard and throws a big left but Vandenhoff blocks it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Blackson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Michael Blackson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Blackson throws a right and a left that Vandenhoff avoids nicely.

Blackson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Vandenhoff can do anything to dispel that myth.
Blackson tries to score with some ground and pound. Vandenhoff controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Blackson is chipping away with strikes.

Blackson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vandenhoff has escaped the position, nice work there.
Vandenhoff being controlled for a moment.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Blackson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Vandenhoff is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Blackson lands a head kick!
Vandenhoff takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Blackson moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Blackson lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Blackson clinches.
Blackson throws an elbow that misses.
Blackson drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Blackson lands a takedown into guard.
Blackson distracts Vandenhoff with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Vandenhoff takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Blackson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Blackson passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Michael Blackson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Blackson remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Blackson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Michael Blackson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Blackson in side control, throwing shots but Vandenhoff defends.
Blackson looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Vandenhoff is avoiding damage well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The referee asks Blackson politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Blackson prefers to stall for the moment though.
Blackson is looking to take a break and control but Vandenhoff is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Michael Blackson just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Blackson cracks Vandenhoff with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Blackson takes the fight into the clinch.
Blackson tries for a takedown but Vandenhoff manages to get underhooks.
Vandenhoff prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Michael Blackson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Blackson shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Vandenhoff manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Gregor Vandenhoff has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Blackson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

And that's the end of the fight!
Michael Blackson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Blackson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
