The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kli looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bates is fending him off so far but Kli persists. Nope, Bates circles away and we're back to standing.
Kli is looking to land body kicks.
Bates uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Kli.

Bates shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Bates showed some decent athleticism there.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Bates's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Bates is pushing down on Kli's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kli is fighting to maintain full guard but Bates has managed to sneak the leg through.
Bates is taking a breather. Kli says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Bates frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Bates takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Let's hope that Bates has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
