The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Syd shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Johnston is trying to defend but Syd finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Johnston punching from the bottom.
Johnston wants to improve his position but Syd is controlling well.
Syd stalling away here and it's allowed Johnston to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Syd controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Syd throws a right hand that Johnston ducks under and follows up with a left that Johnston also avoids with ease.

Johnston shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Johnston was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Johnston cracks Syd with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Johnston postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Syd looks a forlorn figure.

Johnston can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Syd is looking to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
