PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rick Law (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Savage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Savage's choice of entrance music: "Killing In The Name Of" by Rage Against the Machine. The key to victory for Rick Law has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rick Law!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jason Savage!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and .




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Law misses with a takedown attempt - Savage sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Law throws a head kick that misses.
Savage throws a series of strikes that have Law backpedaling.
Law steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Savage.
Law tries to clinch but Savage is having none of it.

Law gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Savage to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Savage trying to control but Law is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Savage seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Savage decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Savage feints and as Law raises his hands in defense, Savage changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Savage pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Law is keeping the position for now.
Savage looks gassed!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Savage accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Savage wants to pass the guard but Law is keeping the position.

Law is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Savage throwing strikes from guard but Law blocks nicely.
Savage trying to control but Law is working from the bottom.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Savage is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Law is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Law has escaped and now he's on top!

Law avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Law thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Savage not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Savage has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Law can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Savage tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Law easily slips into full mount!

Jason Savage dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Law fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Savage manages to avoid it.
Savage shoots in for a takedown but Law shows good takedown defense.
Savage is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Savage has gone for a leg lock! Law slips out almost immediately though and dives into Savage's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Law is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Law wants to pass the guard but Savage is keeping the position.
Savage working a defensive guard but Law passes into half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Savage misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Savage wants to control but Law is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Law tries to clinch there but Savage circles away.

and Savage counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Savage.
Savage wants to control from the top but Law keeps moving.

Savage stands and throws Law's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Savage is trying to get an arm triangle but Law is defending well.
Savage trying to control the position but Law is working away.

Savage thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Savage goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Law has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Savage but great work by Law.

Savage is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Savage is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Law's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Law's back!

Jason Savage showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Savage closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Law stops Savage from passing to mount.

Savage tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Savage has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Savage swings around for an armbar but Law sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Savage's guard.

Savage working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Law doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Law manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Savage counters with a nice double leg into side control. Law won't be happy with that.

Savage is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Law has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Savage trying to control but Law is having none of it.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Savage throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

Savage swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Law is now in Savage's guard. A big mistake from Savage there, giving up the dominant position!
Law advances to half guard.
Law tries to stand but can't do so whilst Savage controls his leg.

Savage looking for submissions off his back.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jason Savage comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Savage has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
