PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Romulo Barral (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Naozumi Akimoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Akimoto has chosen AudioMachine - Assassin as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Romulo Barral!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Naozumi Akimoto!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shigeki Sano and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Akimoto darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Akimoto thows a huge punch but Barral dodges it nicely.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Barral tries to get to full guard but Akimoto has control of the leg.
Akimoto passes to side control.
Akimoto gets to mount! Barral was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Akimoto is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Akimoto tries to control but Barral wriggling away.

Akimoto goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Barral is on top in guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Barral stays in close to Akimoto's body and controls the position.
Akimoto manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Barral manages to get himself to full guard.

Akimoto is looking to work some ground and pound but Barral has wrist control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Akimoto trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Barral manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Akimoto throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Barral escapes and throws Akimoto's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Barral tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Akimoto looks to move to half guard but instead Barral has passed into mount! Damn!
Akimoto regains half guard.
Akimoto is staying active underneath Barral, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Barral tries to pass to full mount but Akimoto defends it.
Akimoto gets back to full guard.
Barral passes Akimoto's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Akimoto wants to improve his position but Barral is controlling well.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Akimoto looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Naozumi Akimoto dominated that round.
That's time! Barral's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Barral closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Akimoto to the mat! Akimoto manages to get full guard.
Barral wants to pass the guard but Akimoto is keeping the position.
Akimoto looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barral wants to control from the top but Akimoto keeps moving.
Barral trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Barral not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Akimoto working for a triangle but Barral defends it easily.
Barral trying to control but Akimoto is working from the bottom.
Akimoto is trying to control the position but Barral postures up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
The fighters circling - Akimoto throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
A head kick misses from Barral.
A combination from Barral does no damage.
Akimoto with a lazy takedown attempt

and Barral counters with a nice double leg into side control. Akimoto won't be happy with that.
Akimoto is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Akimoto is trying to escape back to his feet but Barral uses the scramble to pass into side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Barral tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Akimoto is looking for a sweep.

Barral decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Akimoto shoots and misses

and Barral counters with a takedown into side control.
Akimoto is breathing heavily.

A control attempt from Akimoto but he's now mounted!
Barral controlling from mount.
Barral's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Barral mounts Akimoto! Really nice guard pass there!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Romulo Barral dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Barral throws a push kick but Akimoto slaps the foot to one side.
Akimoto circles away from the clinch attempt.
Akimoto tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Barral counters with a shoot takedown. Akimoto fights it but they end up in guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Barral wants to control from the top but Akimoto keeps moving.
Akimoto is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Barral thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Akimoto is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Barral defends well.
Akimoto looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Barral puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Barral is thwarting Akimoto's attempts to control the position.
Akimoto tries to roll over but Barral keeps him under control.
Barral tries to pass to full mount but Akimoto defends it.
Akimoto trying to hold on to Barral's head to control him but Barral postures up.
Akimoto wants to get back to full guard but Barral has passed into side control.
Akimoto takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Akimoto is working to get back to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Barral wants to control the pace but Akimoto is squirming around nicely.
Akimoto is trying to escape the mount.
Barral unloading with bombs!
Akimoto reaches up to try and control the position but Barral seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Akimoto rolls and tries to escape and now Barral has his back!

Barral is trying to stick to Akimoto's back but Akimoto is turning into Barral. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Barral's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Akimoto.
Barral has Akimoto pulled in close to control his posture.
Barral bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Akimoto's guard.
Akimoto looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Akimoto working for a triangle but Barral defends it easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Barral is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

And that's the end of the fight!
Romulo Barral showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Barral has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
