The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McGuff fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maia avoids it really well and circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from McGuff is defended easily by Maia.
McGuff shoots in and drives through. Maia sprawls well.
D Maia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonh McGuff.

Maia shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in McGuff's guard.

McGuff is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Maia sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed McGuff's guard.

Maia is trying to work for a kimura but McGuff is defending well.

Maia has control of McGuff's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and McGuff regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Maia uses his free foot to push down on McGuff's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for McGuff.

Maia isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McGuff stacks Maia on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McGuff!

McGuff turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Maia off and cradles McGuff's limp body as Maia celebrates with his corner.
