PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabe Higgins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimmy Johnstone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnstone has chosen Living is a Problem as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Gabe Higgins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jimmy Johnstone!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Higgins fails with a takedown attempt.
Johnstone throws a right and a left that Higgins avoids nicely.

Johnstone fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Higgins sprawls well initially but Johnstone persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Higgins is looking to improve his position.
Higgins is not content to let Johnstone control the position.
Higgins is pressing down on Johnstone's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Higgins pulls Johnstone in to control the position.
Higgins keeping moving, preventing Johnstone from controlling successfully.

Johnstone postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Higgins is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Johnstone, into his guard.

Higgins is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Higgins slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Higgins won't allow Johnstone to get back to his feet.
Johnstone looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Johnstone is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Johnstone throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Higgins decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Johnstone, up you get!
Higgins throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Higgins wants to clinch.

Higgins closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Higgins lands in his opponent's guard.

Higgins wants to control from the top but Johnstone keeps moving.
Higgins is standing up over Johnstone. Johnstone looks to escape but Higgins dives into side control.

Higgins tries to move to mount but Johnstone blocks the move with his legs.
Johnstone sneaks back into half guard.
Johnstone trying to control from the bottom.

Johnstone wants to improve his position but Higgins is controlling well.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Higgins lands a nice short elbow.
Johnstone tries to roll over but Higgins keeps him under control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Higgins in particular looking to stall.
Johnstone is trying to control but can't.
Higgins throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Higgins landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Johnstone tries to roll over but Higgins keeps him under control.
Higgins is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Johnstone is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Higgins jumps into side control!

Higgins has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Higgins fails with the takedown.
Higgins shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Johnstone as he jumps to the side.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Higgins avoids a punch combination nicely.

and Johnstone counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Johnstone circles away from the clinch attempt.

Johnstone looks for a takedown but Higgins sprawls well.
Higgins throws a series of punches but Johnstone moves out of range.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Higgins changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Johnstone looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Higgins decides to stand up, so the ref orders Johnstone to his feet.
Johnstone throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Johnstone will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Gabe Higgins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jimmy Johnstone.
Johnstone shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Higgins as he avoids it easily.
Higgins takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Higgins slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Johnstone regains full guard. Nicely done.

Higgins wants to pass the guard but Johnstone is keeping the position.

Johnstone manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Higgins manages to get himself to full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Higgins wants to get back to his feet but Johnstone is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The fight stays on the outside here - Higgins looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Johnstone moves in looking to clinch but Higgins pushes him off.
Johnstone throws a right and a left that Higgins avoids nicely.

and Higgins moves into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Higgins shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Johnstone but Johnstone pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Johnstone lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Higgins backs up against the cage.

and Johnstone counters with a shoot takedown. Higgins fights it but they end up in guard.

Johnstone tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Johnstone has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Higgins tries to hold on but Johnstone postures up.
Johnstone looking to control but Higgins is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Johnstone goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Higgins is on top in guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Johnstone working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Higgins doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Higgins manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Higgins wants the takedown. Johnstone is fighting it off but Higgins persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Johnstone's guard against the cage.

Higgins wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Johnstone, who protects the arm well.
Johnstone is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Higgins is controlling him well.
Johnstone can't do much from the bottom here.
Johnstone tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Higgins scores with a couple of good head shots there.


It looks like Jimmy Johnstone has been cut.

Higgins wants to finish this one by submission but Johnstone is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Higgins.

Jimmy Johnstone has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Higgins is standing up, even though he is in mount.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Gabe Higgins.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Higgins, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
