PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Roy Rage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shonie Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Roy Rage!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Shonie Carter!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rage shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Carter's guard.
Rage preventing the sweep.
Rage trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Carter manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rage manages to get himself to full guard.
Rage wants to sweep but no luck.
Carter trying to control but Rage is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Carter is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Carter won't allow Rage to sweep him here.

Rage working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Carter doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Carter manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Carter advances to half guard.
Rage keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Rage looks like he's trying to stand up.
Carter trying to mount his opponent but Rage defends it.
Rage is looking for a sweep. Carter is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Carter tries to pass the half guard into mount. Rage knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Rage is on the bottom, trying to hold on to half guard. He's throwing a few small shots here, to keep his opponent honest.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Carter shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rage napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Carter tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Carter has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Carter passes to full mount!

Carter is working for a guillotine from mount but Rage frees his head quite easily.
Rage wants to get back to his feet.

Carter misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Rage is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Carter is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Rage can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Carter lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Rage is trying to escape the mount.
Rage wants to control but Carter is having none of it.
Carter dominating with strikes here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shonie Carter dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Carter misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Rage fails with the takedown

and Carter counters with a shoot takedown. Rage fights it but they end up in guard.
Rage tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Carter throws and elbow that misses. Rage uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Carter's guard. Nice move by Rage!
Carter has Rage pulled in close to control his posture.

Rage trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Rage stays in close to Carter's body and controls the position.
Rage wants to get up but he can't break Carter's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Carter is trying to control the position but Rage postures up.
Carter might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Rage kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Rage looking to sit in guard and control but Carter gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Carter wants to clinch.
Rage throws a right and a left that both miss.
Carter shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Rage counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Rage is fighting to break Carter's control of his arms but Carter is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Carter looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rage is one step ahead there.
Carter working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Rage.
Carter has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Rage trying to control but Carter is working from the bottom.
Carter manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Rage takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Carter jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Rage is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Rage and Carter has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Carter misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Carter is breathing heavily.
Rage struggling a bit here.
Rage sneaks back into half guard.
Rage pushes Carter off looking to stand but Carter dives back in and keeps control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Shonie Carter will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Rage swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Rage lands with a nice combination. Carter backs away looking to recover.
Carter tries to clinch up

and Rage counters with a single leg into guard. Carter didn't expect that.
Rage pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Carter is keeping the position for now.
Rage tries to stand but Carter is controlling from the bottom.

Rage wanted to stand there but Carter had control of the position.
Carter keeping moving, preventing Rage from controlling successfully.
Carter has a closed guard, preventing Rage from standing up.
Rage has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Rage displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Carter throws out the jab.
Rage fails to land with a series of punches.

Carter breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Rage tries to bum rush Carter with a series of wild strikes but Carter uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Carter throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
A combination from Rage does no damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Rage gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Carter scoring with punches to the head and body.
Rage is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Carter drops back, looking for a kneebar! Rage looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Rage looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Rage!
Carter takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Carter wants to control but Rage postures up.

Rage stands up and beckons Carter to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rage throws a series of punches but Carter moves out of range.
Rage fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Carter misses with a shot to the body
and Rage counters with a right hand to the body.
Carter with a poor takedown
and Rage counters with a three punch combo that has Carter backing up. Carter nods at Rage to acknowledge the strikes.

Roy Rage has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shonie Carter.

Carter is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Rage's half guard.
Rage is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Carter's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Carter's back!

And that's the end of the fight!
Roy Rage showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Carter has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
