PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Pridmore (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, BJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mark Pridmore!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pridmore misses the shot to the body.

Pridmore closes the distance and clinches.

Pridmore's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Mark Pridmore seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pridmore stuffs the takedown attempt from Penn. Penn gets slowly back to his feet.
Penn looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Pridmore is fending him off so far but Penn persists. Nope, Pridmore circles away and we're back to standing.
Pridmore misses with a double jab.
Penn looks to clinch

and Pridmore counters by moving into the clinch.

Pridmore pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Pridmore shoots in but no luck this time.
Penn keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Pridmore moves into the clinch.

Pridmore's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pridmore circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pridmore has a takedown stuffed.
BJ Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mark Pridmore.
No luck for Pridmore with that takedown attempt.
Pridmore tries to clinch up.
Pridmore tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Penn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
A solid leg kick lands there for Pridmore.
Penn shoots for a takedown but Pridmore saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Penn lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pridmore is looking to clinch but Penn is avoiding it.
Penn wants to clinch but Pridmore slips to the side

and Pridmore counters with a takedown into side control.
Penn tries to bench press Pridmore off him but Pridmore keeps the position.
You can see the frustration on Penn's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Penn regains half guard.
Pridmore is looking to advance position but Penn won't allow it.
Pridmore looks gassed!

Penn looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Pridmore is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Penn has managed to free his arm - good work.
Pridmore wants to pass to mount but Penn is defending the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Penn tries for a takedown but Pridmore sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pridmore as he jumps to the side.
Pridmore misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Penn fails with the takedown.
Penn shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Pridmore but Pridmore pushes him off and we're back to square one.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Penn fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Pridmore stuffs the takedown.
A punch combination from Penn misses.
Pridmore fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Penn.
Pridmore doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Penn counters with a shoot takedown. Pridmore fights it but they end up in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Pridmore dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Penn misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Penn has a takedown stuffed.
Pridmore thows a left - swing and a miss!
Pridmore avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Pridmore clinches.
Pridmore has Penn pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Penn manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Pridmore is breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pridmore's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Pridmore waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract Penn.
Pridmore shoots in but no luck this time.
Penn fails with the takedown.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Pridmore moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Pridmore throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

so Penn counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Penn missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Pridmore really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Penn drops back looking for a leg! Pridmore is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Pridmore manages to kick Penn off! Penn jumps back into Pridmore's guard.

Penn drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Penn seems to have locked his on tight now - Pridmore screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Penn, as he picks up the win!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:03 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). BJ Penn!
