PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Wheeler (ranked 4010 p4p, 4481 weight class) and Videl Marakmanov (ranked 419 p4p, 446 weight class). The key to victory for Ryan Wheeler has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ryan Wheeler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Videl Marakmanov!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Joseph Jones and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Wheeler enables Marakmanov to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Wheeler manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Wheeler bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Marakmanov's guard.

Wheeler is fighting to break Marakmanov's control of his arms but Marakmanov is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Wheeler is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Wheeler tries to free his leg and advance position but Marakmanov is retaining full guard.
Marakmanov pulls Wheeler in close to prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wheeler is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Marakmanov is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Wheeler throws a big elbow that misses.
Wheeler stays in close to Marakmanov's body and controls the position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Marakmanov has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Wheeler defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Marakmanov.
Marakmanov shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Wheeler sprawls well. Wheeler wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Marakmanov gets slowly back to his feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Wheeler tries to clinch but Marakmanov moves out of range.
Marakmanov gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Wheeler counters with a straight right hand.
Ryan Wheeler has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Videl Marakmanov.
Wheeler tests Marakmanov's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Wheeler lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Marakmanov circles away quickly and effectively.
Nice uppercut there from Wheeler.
Wheeler throws a head kick that half lands.
Wheeler tries a head kick but it misses.
Marakmanov changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Wheeler tries to avoid it but Marakmanov manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Wheeler to the ground. Wheeler escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Marakmanov shoots in but no luck this time.
It looked like Wheeler was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Wheeler scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Marakmanov doesn't seem bothered though.
Wheeler throws a sloppy head kick and Marakmanov moves out of range easily.
Wheeler throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Wheeler lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Wheeler.
Marakmanov gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Wheeler.
Wheeler looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Wheeler stuffs the takedown.
Wheeler stalks Marakmanov and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Marakmanov's face. Marakmanov staggers backwards, shaken.
Marakmanov avoids the head kick by Wheeler.
Videl Marakmanov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wheeler's corner calls for a 1-2. Wheeler obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Wheeler moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Marakmanov shoots in for a takedown but Wheeler shows good takedown defense.

Wheeler darts in and clinches Marakmanov up against the ropes.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Wheeler drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Marakmanov gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Wheeler jumps into guard, dragging Marakmanov to the mat.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Marakmanov tries to free his leg and advance position but Wheeler is retaining full guard.
Wheeler controls Marakmanov momentarily but Marakmanov frees himself.

Wheeler working for a triangle but Marakmanov defends it easily.

Marakmanov has gone for a leg lock! Wheeler slips out almost immediately though and dives into Marakmanov's guard.

Wheeler drops back looking for a leg! Marakmanov is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Marakmanov manages to kick Wheeler off! Wheeler jumps back into Marakmanov's guard.

Wheeler decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Marakmanov, up you get!

and Marakmanov counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Marakmanov seems a little lost for a moment, as Wheeler dominates the positioning.
Wheeler wants to control but Marakmanov is keeping him busy.

Wheeler looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Wheeler remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Marakmanov gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Marakmanov is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Wheeler is controlling him.

Wheeler wants to get back to his feet but Marakmanov is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Marakmanov drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Wheeler dives on top into guard.

Wheeler is trying to control the action in half guard but Marakmanov is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Ryan Wheeler overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Wheeler is trying to control. Marakmanov wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Wheeler seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Marakmanov is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:45 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Ryan Wheeler!
After winning the bout, Ryan Wheeler thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
