PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hit Man (ranked 4083 p4p, 3955 weight class) and Rubens Charles (ranked 0 p4p, 353 weight class). Hit Man could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Rubens Charles's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Hit Man!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Rubens Charles!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Richard Clark and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Charles circles away from the clinch attempt.
Charles throws the kick towards the body but Man avoids it.
Charles shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Man but Man pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Charles throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Man.

Man moves into the clinch.

Charles turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Charles manages to end up in side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Man is looking to regain half guard here but Charles keeps moving and retains side control.
Man seems a little lost for a moment, as Charles dominates the positioning.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Man is trying to improve his position.

Man scores with a shot to the body.
Man throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
Man can't do much from the bottom here.
Man is looking for a sweep.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Man wants to get back to his feet but Charles drags him back down.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Man enables Charles to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Man manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Man looking for a sweep. Not yet Man, not yet.
Charles would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Charles wants to pass the guard but Man is keeping the position.

Charles is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Charles wants to stand but Man has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Charles throwing strikes but missing.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Man is controlling Charles's posture.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Charles is defended easily by Man.
Charles misses with a jab, cross combination.
Man tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Charles swivels and escapes.
Charles shoots in for a takedown but Man shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Hit Man has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rubens Charles.

Charles shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Man throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Man takes the fight into the clinch.
Man blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Charles breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Man shoots in for a takedown but Charles shows good takedown defense.
Man is trying hard to land a takedown here. Charles sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Man is breathing heavily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

so Charles counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Rubens Charles dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Charles dives in for a single leg takedown but Man sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Man attempts a counter takedown but Charles avoids it well and moves away.

Man wants to improve his position but Charles is controlling well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Charles thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Man wants to control but Charles is keeping busy.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Man dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Man bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Man working away.
Charles is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Man knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Charles on the ground.
Charles manages to get back to half guard.

Charles is looking to control Man's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Charles avoid being mounted?
Charles is staying active underneath Man, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Charles is controlling Man's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Charles wants to get back to his feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Man tries to clinch there but Charles circles away.
Man shoots in for a takedown but Charles shows good takedown defense.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Charles stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Charles wants it to stay on the feet.
Charles misses with a straight right.

Charles moves into the clinch.
Man just leaning against Charles, taking a breather.
Charles avoiding damage.

Charles gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Charles is working Man over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Charles wants to stand and escape but instead Man has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Rubens Charles has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Charles thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Rubens Charles showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Man pushes Charles off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Man shoots in looking for a takedown. Charles tries to sprawl out of it but Man keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Charles manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Charles closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Charles in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Man is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
