PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Young City Grappler (ranked 4267 p4p, 4936 weight class) and Carlitos Way (ranked 395 p4p, 422 weight class). Young City Grappler had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 156.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Young City Grappler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Carlitos Way!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Way moves into range and clinches up with Grappler.

Way wants the takedown. Grappler is fighting it off but Way persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Grappler's guard against the cage.
Grappler can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Way controls the pace.
Grappler trying to keep a closed guard but Way is proving a slippery customer.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Way trying to stand up but can't free himself from Grappler's guard.
Way not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Grappler might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Way wants to control from the top but Grappler keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Way with a flurry of punches that miss.
Grappler looking for a sweep. Not yet Grappler, not yet.
Way pushing down on Grappler's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Way is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Grappler doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Way.

Way is working for a kimura but Grappler is defending it quite comfortably.

Grappler is looking for a sweep. Way is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Grappler really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

Way is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Grappler is just riding it out for now. Way eventually gives up the hold.
Grappler wants to control but Way is keeping busy.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Way is working for a kimura but Grappler is defending it quite comfortably.
Way thows a huge punch but Grappler dodges it nicely.
Way really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Grappler. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Way is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Grappler doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Way.
Grappler moves into full guard.

Way stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Grappler swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Way passes Grappler's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Way is trying to control the action in half guard but Grappler is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Way wants to work for an arm triangle but Grappler is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Grappler manages to get to full guard.

Way drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Grappler manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Way has Grappler in his guard.

Way can't keep his opponent in guard - Grappler advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Grappler moves into range and clinches up with Way.
Way wants a takedown.

Grappler breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Grappler throws a quick inside leg kick.
Grappler throws a head kick that misses.
And Way tries to counter it with a takedown but Grappler pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Way fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Way shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Way is thwarting Grappler's attempts to control the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Way is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Grappler is just riding it out for now. Way eventually gives up the hold.
Way thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Grappler's head.
Way lands strikes from half guard.
Carlitos Way has got the better of the ground game so far.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Grappler is looking to control Way's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Grappler avoid being mounted?

Grappler has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Way is working away from the top position though.

Way throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Way missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Grappler tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Grappler goes for a double leg but Way avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Way continues to drive forward.
Way has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Grappler is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Young City Grappler has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Carlitos Way.

Grappler jumps into guard, dragging Way to the mat.

Way drops back looking for a leg! Grappler is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Grappler manages to kick Way off! Way jumps back into Grappler's guard.
Grappler utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Way wants to stand but Grappler has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Grappler is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Way has his hands clasped together but Grappler extends and breaks Way's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Grappler.
