Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mauro Okongwu (ranked 11 p4p, 119 weight class) and Daniel Spong (ranked 2 p4p, 12 weight class). Okongwu comes to the cage accompanied by Show Stop - REASON. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 30 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mauro Okongwu!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Daniel Spong!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Okongwu is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Spong has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Okongwu uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Spong.
Spong misses with an uppercut
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Spong on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Spong has his takedown stuffed
and Okongwu makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Spong misses with a body shot.
Okongwu staying out of range there.
Okongwu throwing a counter right hand but Spong manages to avoid it.

Spong misses with a left hand
and Okongwu makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Spong tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Okongwu swivels and escapes.
Okongwu is looking to counter punch.
Okongwu slips a straight right by Spong.
Okongwu swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Okongwu takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
A shot to the body from Spong misses
and Okongwu cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Spong misses with a right hand
and Okongwu counters with an inside leg kick.
Okongwu throws a nice outside leg kick.
Spong scores with a jab. Okongwu acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Okongwu - that will leave a mark!
Okongwu looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Spong looks winded!
Spong ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Okongwu lands with a thumping leg kick.
Spong with a lazy takedown attempt
and Okongwu counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Mauro Okongwu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Spong.
Spong looks to land a right hand but Okongwu moved out of range.
Okongwu is looking to counter punch.
Spong missing with a left hand there. Okongwu was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Spong scores with a hook.
Nice takedown defense from Okongwu. No joy for Spong on that attempt.
Okongwu was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Okongwu uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Spong has time to react.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Spong fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A little feinted left hand from Okongwu on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Spong looks to throw the jab but Okongwu is out of range.
Okongwu scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
A looping hook to the body misses from Spong. Okongwu does a little dance to reset his feet.
Okongwu dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Spong. That did some damage!
Spong ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Okongwu moves away.
Okongwu was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Nice sprawl there from Okongwu as Spong shoots in.
Okongwu is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
Spong misses with a takedown
and Okongwu counters with a left to the body.
Spong throws an off balance right hand
and Okongwu counters with a thumping low kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spong shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Okongwu counters with a nice right hand that sends Spong toppling to the canvas! Spong scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Okongwu finish him?!
Okongwu walks forward and throws a big overhand right! Spong drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes! Okongwu swarms on him with more punches until the referee wrestles him away from Spong's unconscious body! Wow, that was brutal!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mauro Okongwu!
Mauro Okongwu retains his heavyweight title!
An out of breath Mauro Okongwu thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
