PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aldo Leopold (ranked 4005 p4p, 4158 weight class) and Dave Gunner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Aldo Leopold!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dave Gunner!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gunner throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Leopold was covering up waiting for the punch and Gunner finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Leopold controls Gunner momentarily but Gunner frees himself.

Leopold had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gunner defends it easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Leopold is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Leopold thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Leopold escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gunner gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Gunner avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gunner accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Leopold manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Gunner manages to get himself to full guard.

Gunner wants to improve his position but instead Leopold has moved into half guard.
Gunner has hold of Leopold's hands but Leopold slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gunner is staying active underneath Leopold, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Leopold is pressing down on Gunner's thigh, looking to free his foot. Gunner is holding on for now.
Gunner is trying to stand up here but Leopold is controlling him well.
Gunner wants to improve his position but Leopold is controlling well.
Leopold blocks the strikes from Gunner.
Gunner controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Leopold wants to take a breather but Gunner is having none of it.

Gunner preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Gunner is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Leopold scores with a couple of nice shots.
Gunner is refusing to be controlled, as Leopold sits in half guard.
Gunner is looking for a sweep. Leopold is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gunner checks the leg kick nicely there.
Gunner displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Leopold throws out the jab.
Gunner lands a nice looking body shot.
Leopold fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gunner steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.
Leopold is breathing heavily.
Gunner throws out a powerful jab.
Gunner lands a right hook to the body.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Gunner gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Gunner decides to pull guard.
Gunner has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Dave Gunner will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Gunner gets the takedown into side control.
Gunner is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Leopold manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gunner is not content to let Leopold control the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunner wants to improve his position but Leopold is controlling well.
Leopold scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Leopold is trying to control. Gunner wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Leopold wants to pass to mount but Gunner is defending the position.
Leopold is looking to take a break and control but Gunner is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Leopold is looking for a kimura but Gunner is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Leopold to get the leverage.
Leopold takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Leopold is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Leopold is looking to take a break and control but Gunner is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gunner works his way to full guard. Good work.
Gunner really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Leopold. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Gunner working for a triangle but Leopold defends it easily.
Gunner can't keep his opponent in guard - Leopold advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Leopold is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gunner is just riding it out for now. Leopold eventually gives up the hold.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Leopold looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Leopold is trying to control the action in half guard but Gunner is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Aldo Leopold dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Gunner slips a straight right by Leopold.

Gunner drives through with a takedown into Leopold's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Gunner stays in close to Leopold's body and controls the position.
Leopold is trying to keep Gunner in close.

Leopold pushes a forearm under Gunner's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Gunner is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:50 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Aldo Leopold!
