PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ralfe Gracie (ranked 2358 p4p, 3221 weight class) and Melvin Ibarra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ralfe Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Melvin Ibarra!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, James Ackerman and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gracie gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Ibarra to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Ibarra wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.
Ibarra pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gracie is keeping the position for now.

Gracie looking for a guillotine here but Ibarra defends easily.
Ibarra trying to control the position from guard on top but Gracie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gracie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ibarra manages to get himself to full guard.


That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Gracie stops Ibarra from standing up.
Ibarra keeping moving, preventing Gracie from controlling successfully.
Gracie with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Gracie is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ibarra can do anything to dispel that myth.
Ibarra pulls Gracie in close to prevent any damage.
Ibarra lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ibarra would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Gracie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ibarra manages to get himself to full guard.

Gracie slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Ibarra is trying to improve his position.
Gracie throws an elbow but Ibarra slips to the side and avoids it well.
Ibarra is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Gracie is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ibarra knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ibarra tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Gracie misses with the ground and pound.
Ibarra wants to control but Gracie postures up.
Ibarra is trying to improve his position.
You can see the frustration on Ibarra's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Ibarra really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Ibarra wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Ibarra tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gracie wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Ibarra is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Gracie is controlling him well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ibarra wants to control but Gracie postures up.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ibarra keeps working.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ibarra is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Gracie misses with an uppercut. Ibarra saw that one coming.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Ralfe Gracie dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Ibarra scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Ibarra looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Gracie manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Gracie desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Ibarra tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Ralfe Gracie overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gracie slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Gracie working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ibarra doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Gracie is tightening it up a little... Ibarra has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Ibarra reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Ibarra taps out! Nice BJJ there by Gracie!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Ralfe Gracie!
Ralfe Gracie seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
