PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Oppenheimer (ranked 3813 p4p, 4091 weight class) and Paul Paulsen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Oppenheimer kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up. Paul Paulsen has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bobby Oppenheimer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Paulsen!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Daniel Franklin and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paulsen avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Oppenheimer looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Oppenheimer shoots in looking for a takedown. Paulsen tries to sprawl out of it but Oppenheimer keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Paulsen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Paulsen fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Oppenheimer sprawls well initially but Paulsen persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Oppenheimer wants to stand back up but Paulsen manages to pass into side control.
Paulsen in side control lands a decent elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A lull in the action here as Paulsen stalls from top position.
Paulsen has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
You can see the frustration on Oppenheimer's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Paulsen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Paulsen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Paulsen tries to pass the half guard into mount. Oppenheimer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Paulsen seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Oppenheimer wants to control but Paulsen is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Paulsen seems to be looking for submissions.

Paulsen wants to work for an arm triangle but Oppenheimer is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Paulsen wants to free his trapped foot but Oppenheimer is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Oppenheimer wants to control but Paulsen is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Paulsen seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Paulsen is taking a breather. Oppenheimer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Paulsen is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Oppenheimer doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Paulsen.
Oppenheimer wants to get back to full guard but Paulsen has mounted him!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Paulsen closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Paulsen lands in his opponent's guard.
Paulsen controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Paulsen gets to his feet - Oppenheimer follows without any prompting.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Oppenheimer dives in for a single leg takedown but Paulsen sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Paulsen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Oppenheimer manages to get himself to full guard.

Paulsen throws a sloppy head kick and Oppenheimer moves out of range easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Oppenheimer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Paulsen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Oppenheimer moves in looking to clinch but Paulsen pushes him off.
Paulsen throws a sloppy head kick and Oppenheimer moves out of range easily.

Paulsen is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Oppenheimer darts in looking for a takedown but Paulsen gets double underhooks and turns Oppenheimer into the cage.

Paulsen drops down looking for an ankle pick but Oppenheimer pulls his leg out and moves away.
Oppenheimer feints a jab promting Paulsen to slip. Oppenheimer then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Paulsen slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

It looks like Paul Paulsen has been cut.
Oppenheimer misses with a takedown attempt - Paulsen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Oppenheimer shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Bobby Oppenheimer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Paulsen closes the distance and pushes Oppenheimer back into the cage.
Paulsen lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Paulsen ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Paulsen no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Paulsen holds on and takes a little breather.
Oppenheimer won't allow Paulsen to sweep him here.

Paulsen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Oppenheimer to the mat! Oppenheimer manages to get full guard.

Horrible takedown attempt by Oppenheimer or perhaps it was just good defense by Paulsen, which made it look bad.

Paulsen changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Oppenheimer looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Oppenheimer is trying to break the clinch but Paulsen has him pressed against the cage.

Oppenheimer throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Oppenheimer shoots in but no luck this time.
A nice side step and Paulsen releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Paulsen misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Oppenheimer is looking for a counter combo.
Oppenheimer throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Paulsen's waist but Paulsen gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Oppenheimer off to one side.

Paulsen turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Paulsen manages to end up in side control.

Oppenheimer has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.

Paul Paulsen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Paulsen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
