PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Phil St. Georges (ranked 3058 p4p, 5165 weight class) and Figueson Deiveiredo (ranked 0 p4p, 297 weight class). Deiveiredo has chosen Mission Impossible - Adam Clayton as his entrance music. Figueson Deiveiredo told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phil St. Georges!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Figueson Deiveiredo!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, William Peck and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

St. Georges shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Deiveiredo is trying to defend but St. Georges finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Deiveiredo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

St. Georges is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

St. Georges looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
St. Georges prevents Deiveiredo from improving his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

St. Georges is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Deiveiredo defends it well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
St. Georges is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Deiveiredo felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
St. Georges passes to full mount!
St. Georges takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Deiveiredo tries to hold on but St. Georges pushes him away.

St. Georges is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Deiveiredo is surviving well by controlling St. Georges's body position as best he can.
Deiveiredo wants to control but St. Georges is having none of it.
Deiveiredo is looking to improve his position but St. Georges isn't that keen on the idea.

St. Georges looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Deiveiredo is in all sorts of trouble here.

Deiveiredo is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. St. Georges locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Deiveiredo is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:44 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Phil St. Georges!
Phil St. Georges seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
The defeated Figueson Deiveiredo had this to say: 'Dude got lucky, but luck runs out.'.
