PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jake Seagal (ranked 3246 p4p, 3280 weight class) and Matthew Basset (ranked 372 p4p, 376 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jake Seagal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matthew Basset!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Seagal tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Basset is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Seagal with a body shot.
Basset fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Seagal clinches with his opponent.

Basset turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Basset manages to end up in side control.
Basset creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Seagal sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Seagal tries to get back to half guard but can't.
We've been hearing good reports from Seagal's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Basset decides to stand back up.
Seagal shoots in for a double leg but Basset sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Seagal has closed the distance and engaged Basset in a clinch.
Seagal jumps guard but Basset stands there with Seagal around his waist. Seagal gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Basset gets control of Seagal's arms and successfully pulls guard. Basset will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Seagal is stalling in the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Basset looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Basset trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Basset throws some shots to the body, keeping his opponent honest.
Basset pulls Seagal in close to his closed guard and prevents Seagal from doing any damage or advancing position.
Basset not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Basset should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Basset is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Seagal defends well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Seagal avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Seagal stands up and waves to Basset to follow him.
Basset stuffs the takedown.

Seagal gets control of Basset's arms and successfully pulls guard. Seagal will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Seagal has his foot on Basset's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Basset works his way back into a safe position though.
Basset stands up over Seagal, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Basset stands and steps away. Seagal gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Basset closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Seagal to the mat! Seagal manages to get full guard.
Seagal is wriggling around but Basset manages to pass to half guard.


Basset is working for a submission of some sort.
Basset not doing much here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Basset thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Seagal's head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Basset shoots in looking for a takedown. Seagal tries to sprawl out of it but Basset keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Seagal manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Seagal shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Basset but Basset pushes him off and we're back to square one.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Basset leaves Seagal with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Basset dives in and grabs Seagal's left leg, looking for a takedown. Seagal pushes down on Basset's head and hops out.

Seagal has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Basset regains guard immediately.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Basset throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Seagal escapes and throws Basset's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Seagal has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Seagal shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Basset but Basset pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Basset moves in looking to clinch but Seagal pushes him off.

and Seagal counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Basset has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Seagal is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Basset breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
No luck for Basset with that takedown attempt.

Seagal shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Basset's guard.
Seagal has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Basset is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Seagal will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Seagal is looking to regain half guard here but Basset keeps moving and retains side control.

Seagal manages to work his way to half guard, despite Basset's best efforts.
My spies in Rio Grappling Club inform me that Basset has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Basset seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Seagal is trying to stand.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Basset fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Seagal avoids it really well and circles away.

Basset gets a clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Seagal throws a knee to the head but misses.
Seagal wants to take the fight to the mat but Basset manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Basset escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matthew Basset comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Basset has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
