PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lane Cross (ranked 4953 p4p, 5113 weight class) and Naoki Kimura (ranked 295 p4p, 303 weight class). Naoki Kimura will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Lane Cross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Naoki Kimura !
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cross walks into a straight right hand from Kimura .
Kimura lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Cross circles away quickly and effectively.
Cross is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Kimura .
Cross uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Kimura .
Cross is looking to counter the offense by Kimura and move into the clinch.
Kimura scores with a hook to the body. Cross takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Kimura throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Cross counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cross is stalling in the full guard.
Kimura really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cross. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kimura is trying to keep Cross in close.
Cross stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kimura swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kimura utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cross postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Cross sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kimura 's guard.
Kimura has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cross is working away from the top position though.
Cross not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Cross sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kimura defending well though.

Cross is looking for a kimura here.
Cross content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Cross seems to be working for a kimura but Kimura defends the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cross is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Cross is trying to work for a kimura but Kimura is defending well.
Kimura wants to control but Cross is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Kimura is trying to stand.
Cross has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cross controlling the action here.
Kimura avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Cross.
Cross takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Cross looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kimura looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Cross in particular looking to stall.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cross has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Cross looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kimura trying to control from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Kimura wants to improve his position but Cross is controlling well.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Kimura misses with a lunging right hand

and Cross counters with a single leg into guard. Kimura didn't expect that.

Kimura is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Lane Cross dominated that round.
That's time! Cross's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Kimura digs a good hook to Cross's body.
Cross tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kimura sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cross somewhat.
Kimura falls off balance throwing a combination

and Cross decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Kimura 's guard.
Lane Cross overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Cross tries to free his leg and advance position but Kimura is retaining full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cross drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Cross seems to have locked his on tight now - Kimura screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Cross, as he picks up the win!
