PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Deivson Barros (ranked 4497 p4p, 4506 weight class) and Matt Newman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Deivson Barros!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Matt Newman!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barros throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Newman's waist but Newman gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Barros off to one side.
Newman raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Barros pushes Newman up against the cage in a clinch.

Newman pulls guard effortlessly.
Barros stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Newman swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Newman fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Barros checks it well.

Barros is looking to clinch but Newman is avoiding it.
Barros goes for a double leg but Newman avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Newman continues to drive forward.
Newman wants to counter the offense by Barros and move into the clinch position.

Barros tries to pull guard but Newman holds him up against the cage and eventually Barros drops back down to his feet.

Newman has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Barros clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Newman doesn't have the hooks in and Barros manages to turn into his guard.
Newman controls Barros momentarily but Barros frees himself.
Newman wants to sweep here but Barros controlling him for the moment.
Barros slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Barros seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Newman for as long as he can get away with.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Newman throws out a leg kick but Barros moves out of range and Newman only half commits.

Newman throws a leg kick but Barros moved away.
As Newman tries to get set, Barros tries to push him back and clinch up but Newman manages to avoid the attempt.
Barros dives in for a single leg takedown but Newman sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Newman throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Barros tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Newman is in Barros's guard.
Barros is looking to stand back up but Newman counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Barros.

Newman content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Newman's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Newman is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Barros has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Newman is on him like a limpet, forcing Barros back against the cage.
Barros wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Newman is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Barros jumps guard but Newman stands there with Barros around his waist. Barros gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Barros wants a takedown but no success here.

Newman's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Barros throws a head kick but Newman moves out of range.

Newman decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Newman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Barros shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Newman sprawls well. Newman wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Barros gets slowly back to his feet.

Barros takes a swing at Newman's ribcage but misses.

Newman looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Newman tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Barros tries to break free but Newman pushes him back against the cage.
Barros tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Newman smiles and moves away.
Barros tries to clinch but Newman moves out of range.
Newman let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

Newman scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Newman lands a nice short elbow.
Newman tries to stand and escape but Barros actually recovers to full guard.

Barros is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Barros keeping moving, preventing Newman from controlling successfully.

Newman lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Barros can't keep his opponent in guard - Newman advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Barros might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Newman lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Barros has hold of Newman's hands but Newman slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Newman takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matt Newman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Newman winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
