PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Uchima Gonshiro (ranked 5575 p4p, 3898 weight class) and Derek Blueboy (ranked 0 p4p, 232 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Uchima Gonshiro!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek Blueboy!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Ren Mimura and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Blueboy darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Blueboy takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
It looks like Blueboy might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Blueboy misses with a head shot. Gonshiro uses the momentum to regain guard.
Blueboy is looking to stand up but Gonshiro won't let him.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Blueboy working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gonshiro is on top in guard.

Gonshiro stands and throws Blueboy's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Gonshiro is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Blueboy to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Blueboy shrugs it off.

Blueboy tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Gonshiro working for a guillotine from mount but Blueboy is in no mood to give up.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Gonshiro is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Blueboy is surviving well by controlling Gonshiro's body position as best he can.

Gonshiro get's back to his feet.

Blueboy pushes Gonshiro up against the cage in a clinch.

Gonshiro is fighting off a takedown attempt but Blueboy is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Gonshiro to the mat. Gonshiro regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Blueboy decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gonshiro, up you get!

Blueboy closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Gonshiro's guard.

Blueboy stands up from Gonshiro's guard - Blueboy perhaps looking for a knockout.

Blueboy is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gonshiro doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Blueboy.

A close round but Derek Blueboy will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Blueboy shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Blueboy showed some decent athleticism there.

Gonshiro kicks Blueboy off and gets back to his feet.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Gonshiro is trying to maintain the position but Blueboy is very close to passing his half guard.

Blueboy is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Blueboy is breathing heavily.

Gonshiro fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Blueboy clinches up with Gonshiro and pushes him back against the cage.

Blueboy breaks from the clinch.
Gonshiro shoots in for a double leg but Blueboy sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Gonshiro tries to pull guard but Blueboy won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Uchima Gonshiro. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Blueboy connects with a nasty looking knee right to Gonshiro's face.

Blueboy's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
No luck for Gonshiro with that takedown attempt.

Blueboy tightens his grip and picks Gonshiro up, before dumping him to the ground. Gonshiro manages to land in guard.

Blueboy gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Gonshiro closes the distance and clinches up with Blueboy, looking for a takedown. Gonshiro pushes Blueboy against the cage but Blueboy circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Gonshiro.

Gonshiro is trying to control the position but Blueboy postures up.
Blueboy controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Blueboy stands up and waves to Gonshiro to follow him.

Derek Blueboy showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Blueboy must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gonshiro thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Gonshiro postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Blueboy is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gonshiro, into his guard.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Blueboy is looking to work some ground and pound but Gonshiro has wrist control.
Blueboy trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Derek Blueboy has got the better of the ground game so far.
Blueboy postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Gonshiro bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Blueboy's guard.

Gonshiro wants to control from the top but Blueboy keeps moving.
Uchima Gonshiro has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Blueboy is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gonshiro postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Blueboy is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gonshiro, into his guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Derek Blueboy comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Blueboy has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
