PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Gareth Keenan Jr (ranked 1871 p4p, 1958 weight class) and Matija Maestro (ranked 143 p4p, 151 weight class). Maestro has chosen Shortwire - Reconfig as his entrance music. Matija Maestro told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gareth Keenan Jr!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matija Maestro!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maestro swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Keenan Jr slips a jab and a cross from Maestro.
Keenan Jr went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Maestro throws a left and a right that both miss

and Keenan Jr counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Keenan Jr.
Maestro tries for a takedown. No joy.
Maestro is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Keenan Jr is looking to break free of the clinch but Maestro has double underhooks.

Keenan Jr escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Keenan Jr fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Maestro looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Keenan Jr is fending him off so far but Maestro persists. Nope, Keenan Jr circles away and we're back to standing.

Matija Maestro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Keenan Jr escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Maestro gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Keenan Jr has control of Maestro's left arm, preventing Maestro from doing any damage.

Maestro goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Keenan Jr turns into him and now he's in Maestro's guard.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Keenan Jr tries to move into range but Maestro moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

Maestro lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Keenan Jr or not.

Maestro escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Maestro shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Keenan Jr but Keenan Jr pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Keenan Jr throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

Gareth Keenan Jr is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maestro cracks a nice hook into Keenan Jr's ribs.

Keenan Jr doesn't manage to clinch there - Maestro circles away.

Maestro is taking a breather. Keenan Jr says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Maestro is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Matija Maestro showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Keenan Jr's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Maestro rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Keenan Jr moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

so Maestro counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Maestro passes Keenan Jr's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Maestro is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Keenan Jr defends it well.
Maestro wants to lay and pray for a moment but Keenan Jr keeps working.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Maestro looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Maestro feints and as Keenan Jr raises his hands in defense, Maestro changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Keenan Jr is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Keenan Jr is working for a kimura but Maestro is defending it quite comfortably.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
