PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between The Wilson (ranked 1855 p4p, 4483 weight class) and Marten Marsi (ranked 211 p4p, 445 weight class). Wilson's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Painkiller. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, The Wilson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Marten Marsi!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Michael Johnstone and Winston Alpacca.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wilson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Wilson lands in his opponent's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wilson controlling from the top position.
Wilson throwing strikes but missing.
Wilson stands and throws Marsi's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Marsi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Wilson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
You can see the frustration on Marsi's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Marsi is looking to reverse the position.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Wilson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Marsi takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Wilson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Marsi, who protects the arm well.

Marsi takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Marsi prevents Wilson from improving position.
Wilson remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Wilson remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Wilson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Marsi is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wilson happy to just control the position for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Marsi can't do much from the bottom here.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The Wilson dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Wilson goes for a double leg but Marsi avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Marsi continues to drive forward.

Wilson tightens his grip and picks Marsi up, before dumping him to the ground. Marsi manages to land in guard.

Marsi pushes Wilson off and gets back to his feet.
Wilson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Marsi connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Wilson walks into a stiff left hand from Marsi.

Wilson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Marsi's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Marsi wants to stand but Wilson is controlling the position.
Wilson chips away with some ground and pound.
Wilson lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Wilson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Wilson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Marsi is trying to control the position but Wilson postures up.
Wilson controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Wilson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Wilson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Wilson is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Marsi can do to turn this around?
Wilson wants to pass the guard but Marsi is keeping the position.
Wilson postures up and lands a big shot to Marsi's brow.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

This is a sustained period of stalling by Wilson.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Wilson fails with an attempt to clinch.
Marsi throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Wilson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Wilson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Marsi swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Wilson is stalling in the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Wilson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Wilson postures up.
Wilson in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Wilson content to stall in guard here.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Marsi can't keep his opponent in guard - Wilson advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Wilson lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Still in half guard, Wilson seems content to control.
Wilson continues to hold on tight.
Wilson thows a huge punch but Marsi dodges it nicely.
Wilson controlling the pace.
Wilson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Marsi for as long as he can get away with.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Wilson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Wilson not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Marsi wants to control but Wilson is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Wilson is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Wilson connects with a nice short shot to Marsi's temple.
Wilson is controlling the pace.
Further stalling from Wilson.
The Wilson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Wilson shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Wilson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Marsi trying to hold on to Wilson's head to control him but Wilson postures up.
Well, if Wilson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Marsi misses with a lunging right hand

and Wilson counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Marsi!
Marsi is letting Wilson control him for a moment.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Wilson has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
The Wilson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Marsi gets caught napping as Wilson dives in and scores a takedown. Marsi manages to retain guard.

Marsi uses the cage to get back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Marten Marsi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Wilson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
