PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paulo Pupavarro (ranked 4447 p4p, 4484 weight class) and Samu Suomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Paulo Pupavarro!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Samu Suomi!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Wagner Zegers and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pupavarro tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Suomi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Suomi unleashes a big counter combination but Pupavarro bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Pupavarro throws a push kick but Suomi slaps the foot to one side.

and Pupavarro holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Suomi tries to score a body lock takedown but Pupavarro shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Suomi is trying to break the clinch but Pupavarro is controlling him.
Pupavarro misses with an elbow strike.
Suomi is pressed up against the cage. Pupavarro has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Suomi down to the mat. Suomi avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Pupavarro really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Suomi wants to counter with a clinch but Pupavarro pushes him away.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Suomi.
Pupavarro tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Suomi manages to circle out of the way.

Suomi must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Suomi has gone for a leg lock! Pupavarro slips out almost immediately though and dives into Suomi's guard.

Suomi pulls Pupavarro in close to his closed guard and prevents Pupavarro from doing any damage or advancing position.

Pupavarro gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Pupavarro drives through with a takedown into Suomi's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Pupavarro tries to clinch up but Suomi circles away and keeps his distance.

It looked like Pupavarro wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Pupavarro shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Suomi is trying to defend but Pupavarro finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Suomi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pupavarro. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Suomi wants to control but Pupavarro is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Pupavarro seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Pupavarro slips a nice elbow through Suomi's hands, connecting with Suomi's forehead.
Pupavarro wants to take a breather but Suomi is having none of it.
Pupavarro is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Suomi is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Suomi throws a right hand that Pupavarro ducks under and follows up with a left that Pupavarro also avoids with ease.

Suomi is working to avoid the ground and pound but Pupavarro connects with a decent elbow.

Suomi is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Pupavarro asserts his dominance and retains side control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Suomi is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Pupavarro is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

That was a close second round but I would say that Paulo Pupavarro will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Pupavarro closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Suomi's guard.
Pupavarro is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Pupavarro accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Pupavarro has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Pupavarro shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Suomi but Suomi pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Samu Suomi seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Horrible takedown attempt by Pupavarro or perhaps it was just good defense by Suomi, which made it look bad.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Pupavarro tries a head kick but it misses.
Suomi lands with a shot to the body.

Suomi shoots in looking for a takedown. Pupavarro tries to sprawl out of it but Suomi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Pupavarro manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
As Suomi tries to get set, Pupavarro tries to push him back and clinch up but Suomi manages to avoid the attempt.
Pupavarro displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Suomi.

As Suomi backs away, Pupavarro returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Samu Suomi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Paulo Pupavarro is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pupavarro, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
