The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
spartin takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Alves lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but spartin circles away quickly and effectively.
Alves lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
spartin fails with a takedown attempt.
spartin tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Alves swivels and escapes.
Alves misses with an uppercut.
Alves throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

spartin fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Alves sprawls well initially but spartin persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

spartin is trying to work for a kimura but Alves is defending well.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. spartin lands a nice short elbow.

Alves kicks spartin off and gets back to his feet.
spartin fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for john spartin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alves lands a really nice looking cross but spartin seems unphased.
spartin looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
spartin shoots for a takedown but Alves saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

spartin displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Alves throws out the jab.

Alves fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches spartin on the side of the head.

Alves connects with a nice looking jab.
spartin ducks under a wild hook from Alves.
spartin has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Alves finds it's way round the side to connect with spartin's head.
Alves scores with a shot to the body.
spartin takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
spartin moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
john spartin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Alves fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Alves plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

spartin is rocked!
Alves cracks spartin with a nasty uppercut that draws ooohs from the crowd and sends spartin tumbling backwards onto the mat. He tries to recover but Alves pounces and lands a hail of unanswered strikes that forces the referee to step in to end the fight! spartin is not happy but he gave the referee no choice!
