PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Hamish McKay (ranked 3656 p4p, 24385 weight class) and Marc Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson comes into a darkened arena with his song building. 300 Violin Orchestra kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hamish McKay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Marc Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson is trying hard to land a takedown here. McKay sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
McKay tries to close the distance and clinch up but Johnson swats him away and circles back towards the center.

McKay is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Johnson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Johnson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
McKay is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fight stays on the outside here - McKay looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Johnson gets tackled into the cage by McKay. McKay maintains the clinch.
McKay jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Johnson walks away with a smile on his face. McKay gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

McKay tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Johnson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Johnson follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.

Johnson is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
McKay tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
McKay's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Johnson wants to control but McKay is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

McKay tries to clinch there but Johnson circles away.
McKay moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.
Johnson shoots in looking for a takedown. McKay tries to sprawl out of it but Johnson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. McKay manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
McKay avoids the head kick by Johnson.

McKay tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
McKay is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Johnson to keep the fight standing.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
McKay has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.
Johnson scores with a crisp jab that stopped McKay in his tracks.

Johnson stalks McKay and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into McKay's face. McKay staggers backwards, shaken.

It looks like Hamish McKay has been cut.
Johnson fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but McKay avoids it really well and circles away.

McKay jumps guard but Johnson stands there with McKay around his waist. McKay gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Johnson can do anything to dispel that myth.
McKay continues to stall.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Hamish McKay will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Hamish McKay's cut.
That's time! McKay's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
McKay stands and throws Johnson's legs to the side, diving into side control.
McKay moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

McKay has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Hamish McKay is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
McKay leaves Johnson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for McKay, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
