PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ali Amir (ranked 623 p4p, 875 weight class) and Banana Republic (ranked 69 p4p, 98 weight class). Amir's entrance music is Mastodon - Gobblers of Dregs. A fine choice. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ali Amir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Banana Republic!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Shigeki Sano and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Republic checks a low kick from Amir.
Amir throws a chopping leg kick but Republic manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Republic is looking for the big counter here.

and Republic counters with a stiff right hand.

It looks like Ali Amir has been cut.
Republic fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Amir has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Republic uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Amir.

Republic moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Amir feints and then cracks Republic's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Republic down.

and Republic counters with a three punch combo that has Amir backing up. Amir nods at Republic to acknowledge the strikes.

Amir clobbers Republic with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Republic dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Amir. That did some damage!

Republic avoids the head kick by Amir.
Amir throws a leg kick but Republic checks it.
Republic goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Amir swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Republic swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Amir.
Amir shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Republic! But no joy.
Republic fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.

Amir avoids a kick to the body.
Amir connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Nice straight punches there by Amir. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Amir.
Republic cracks a nice hook into Amir's ribs.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Amir scores with the left hand. Republic knows he should have avoided that one.
Some bone on bone action there as Republic checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

Amir blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Republic using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Amir has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Republic tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Amir avoids it.
Amir is trying to maintain a safe position but Republic gets an underhook and turns Amir into the cage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Amir will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Republic sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Amir's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Republic stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Amir swivels though and keeps the full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Republic is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Amir here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

That kick from Amir tenderised Republic's leg. Republic is trying to keep his angry face on.

Republic throws a low kick, looking for Amir's leg but Amir calmly moves out of range.

Republic misses with the head strike.
Amir tries to pull guard but Republic forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Republic is looking to stand up but Amir won't let him.
Republic sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Amir looking to hit a scissor sweep but Republic is one step ahead there.
Ali Amir is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Amir looking for a guillotine here but Republic defends easily.

Well Amir has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
