PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Merel (ranked 404 p4p, 653 weight class) and Rockwell Mcgee (ranked 39 p4p, 57 weight class). Mcgee has chosen Rocky Balboa - Música de entrenamiento as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Merel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rockwell Mcgee!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Chris Dean and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mcgee throws a shot from downtown. Merel moves away and avoids it.
Mcgee slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Mcgee throws the left hand but Merel avoids the punch easily.
Merel swinging wildly here.
Merel scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Merel avoids the body shot from Mcgee.
Mcgee has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Mcgee lands a nice hook to Merel's body. Merel takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Merel shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mcgee sprawls well. Mcgee wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Merel gets slowly back to his feet.
Merel looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Mcgee takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Mcgee counters with a nice uppercut.
Merel looks to land a left hand but Mcgee moved out of range nicely.
Mcgee let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

Mcgee uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Merel has time to react.

It looks like Anthony Merel has been cut.
Mcgee misses the shot to the body.
Oh Merel is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Mcgee throws a right and a left that Merel avoids nicely.
Merel seems to have got his legs back now.

Merel shoots in and gets a takedown into Mcgee's guard.

Merel prevents Mcgee from getting back to his feet.
Merel throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Mcgee really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Merel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mcgee utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Merel drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Merel jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Merel connects with a looping right hand.
Merel swats away the attempt to clinch by Mcgee.
Merel darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

Mcgee missing with a left hand there. Merel was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Merel drops down looking for a counter takedown but Mcgee sprawls and moves away.
Mcgee lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Merel circles away quickly and effectively.
Merel misses with an uppercut.
Mcgee tries to bum rush Merel with a series of wild strikes but Merel uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Mcgee throws a hook to the side of Merel's head but Merel sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Merel fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mcgee manages to avoid it.
Mcgee throws a nice looking combination but Merel bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

and Merel counters with a nice uppercut.

enabling Merel to counter with a crisp jab.
Merel on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Merel throws a body punch but Mcgee moves out of range.

and Merel counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Mcgee tests Merel's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Rockwell Mcgee is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Mcgee dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

and Merel counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Merel looks to throw the jab but Mcgee is out of range.
Mcgee appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Merel fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mcgee manages to avoid it.
Merel slips a jab and a cross from Mcgee.
Mcgee displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Merel throws out the jab.
Mcgee swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Nice defenses there by Mcgee.
Mcgee throws a jab when Merel was well out of range.
Mcgee ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Mcgee's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Mcgee duly obliges.
Merel defending well as Mcgee loads up on a big left hand.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Rockwell Mcgee will probably get the nod.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Rockwell Mcgee seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Mcgee is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Mcgee ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Merel moves away.
Merel drops Mcgee with a naaaaasty hook - Mcgee is in real trouble here! Merel dives in to side control and pounds out his opponent for a TKO victory! The crowd goes nuts!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:36 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Anthony Merel!
After winning the bout, Anthony Merel thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
