PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joey Barboza (ranked 3368 p4p, 4100 weight class) and John Piercer (ranked 387 p4p, 420 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joey Barboza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, John Piercer!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Igor Prikhodko and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Barboza is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Piercer's half guard.

Barboza seems to be looking for submissions.

Barboza is working for a kimura but Piercer is defending it quite comfortably.

Barboza is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Barboza is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Piercer defends it well.

Barboza drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Barboza jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Piercer felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Piercer is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

Barboza is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Piercer is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Piercer has escaped and now he's on top!

Piercer slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Barboza pushes Piercer off and gets back to his feet.
Barboza shoots in looking for a takedown. Piercer tries to sprawl out of it but Barboza keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Piercer manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Barboza gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Piercer misses with an uppercut.
Piercer moves away from the strike by Barboza.
Barboza tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Piercer paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Barboza changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Piercer tries to avoid it but Barboza manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Piercer to the ground. Piercer escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Piercer connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Joey Barboza seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Piercer makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Piercer.

Piercer wants to get back to his feet but Barboza is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

John Piercer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

A decent looking cross lands there for Piercer.

Barboza closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Piercer's guard.

Barboza has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Piercer has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Barboza lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Barboza is pressing down on Piercer's thigh, looking to free his foot. Piercer is holding on for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Joey Barboza.
I think Barboza has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
