PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Justin Terry (ranked 24053 p4p, 4721 weight class) and Jason Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Justin Terry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jason Smith!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Colin Fray and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Smith as Terry shoots in.
Terry shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Smith scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Terry tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Terry manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Terry looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Smith is fending him off so far but Terry persists. Nope, Smith circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Justin Terry. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Terry shoots for a takedown but Smith saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smith is defended easily by Terry.

Terry wants to clinch.

Smith moves into the clinch successfully.
Smith is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Terry pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Smith is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Terry fails with an attempt to clinch.
Terry leaves Smith with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Smith tries a head kick but it misses.
Smith avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith dives in and grabs Terry's left leg, looking for a takedown. Terry pushes down on Smith's head and hops out.
Terry tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Smith counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Terry is looking to clinch but Smith is avoiding it.

Smith takes the fight into the clinch.
Smith is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Terry gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Come on Smith - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Smith pulls guard.
Smith keeping moving, preventing Terry from controlling successfully.

Terry avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Smith seems keen to control Terry's posture.
Smith's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Terry trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith stalling.

Smith is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Smith gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Smith forces Terry back against the cage and clinches.
Smith is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith stops a takedown attempt from Terry.
Smith wants a takedown.
Terry is pressed up against the cage. Smith has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Terry down to the mat. Terry avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Smith dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Terry tries to land a front kick but Smith steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Terry tries to score a power double leg takedown but Smith sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Terry somewhat.
Terry takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Terry sprawls well. Terry wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Smith gets slowly back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Terry avoids the head kick by Smith.
Nice takedown defense from Terry. No joy for Smith on that attempt.
Smith keeps the fight on the outside.
Some wild striking there from Smith.
Terry is looking to counter with head kicks.

Terry tries to close the distance and clinch up but Smith swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Smith blocks a leg kick.
Smith raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Smith has closed the distance and engaged Terry in a clinch.
Terry is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Smith is keeping busy.
Terry looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Terry tries to work over Smith's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Terry has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Smith is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Smith jumps into guard, dragging Terry to the mat.

Smith working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Terry doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Terry manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Smith bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Terry's guard.

Smith postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Smith pushes down on Terry's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Smith passes the guard and advances to mount!

Terry is desperately trying to improve his position but Smith has a good base and remains in mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Terry is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Terry tries to hold on but Smith postures up.
Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Smith looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Terry keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Smith controlling from the full mount.
Terry is looking to get to half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith lands a heavy elbow.

Smith jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Terry manages to avoid the submission attempt.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Terry wants to clinch.
Smith darts in looking for a takedown but Terry gets double underhooks and turns Smith into the cage.
Terry is looking to counter the offense by Smith and move into the clinch.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Terry has Smith pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Smith manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Smith pulls Terry in close to prevent any damage.

Smith scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Smith is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Terry's half guard.

Terry has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smith is working away from the top position though.

Smith thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Terry is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold.

Smith seems to be looking for submissions.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Smith is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Terry sees it coming and defends easily.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Smith throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Smith decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Smith works over Terry's head and body with a nice combination.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Smith.
Terry throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Terry off to one side.
Terry stuffs the takedown attempt from Smith. Smith gets slowly back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Terry doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Smith counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jason Smith comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
