PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Branko Banik (ranked 4446 p4p, 5253 weight class) and Blaz Stuhe (ranked 526 p4p, 573 weight class). The key to victory for Branko Banik has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Branko Banik!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Blaz Stuhe!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Percy O'Donnell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stuhe throws a looping overhand right but Banik ducks down to avoid it.
Banik wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Banik changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Stuhe tries to avoid it but Banik manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Stuhe to the ground. Stuhe escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Stuhe's coach down at Cozad MMA St Petersburg was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Stuhe's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Banik closes the distance and pushes Stuhe back into the cage.

Stuhe gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Stuhe trying to control from Banik's half guard. Banik has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Stuhe trying to control but Banik is working from the bottom.
Stuhe really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Banik. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Stuhe postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stuhe throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Stuhe pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Banik is keeping the position for now.
Stuhe looking to sit in guard and control but Banik gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Banik slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Banik distracts Stuhe with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Stuhe utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Banik works over Stuhe with some ground and pound from guard.
Stuhe keeping moving, preventing Banik from controlling successfully.
Banik loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Stuhe is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Banik looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Stuhe keeps trying to improve his position.
Banik slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Banik accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Stuhe can do anything to dispel that myth.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Banik lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Stuhe tries to strike from the bottom.
Banik is working Stuhe over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Banik keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Stuhe's head.
Stuhe is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Stuhe is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Banik cracks Stuhe with a solid left hand.

Banik has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Stuhe looking to control but Banik passes into half guard.
Stuhe has a hand on Banik's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Banik takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Banik with shots to the head and body - Stuhe looks very uncomfortable down there.

Banik wants to control the pace but Stuhe is squirming around nicely.
Banik breaks from Stuhe's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Stuhe is bucking up trying to escape but Banik cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Banik scoring with strikes but Stuhe is staying in there.
Stuhe tries to lock up and control but Banik gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Stuhe is rocked!
Banik loads up with a big shot that hurts Stuhe! He's pulled Banik in close but Banik has postured up and lands more strikes. Can Stuhe survive? More strikes from Banik and Stuhe is out! The ref jumps in to save him! Brutal ground and pound!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Branko Banik!
During a confident post fight interview, Branko Banik thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
