PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marcus Hansen (ranked 2280 p4p, 1465 weight class) and Ike James (ranked 305 p4p, 202 weight class). Hansen's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Black Sabbath - Iron Man. The key to victory for Marcus Hansen has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Marcus Hansen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ike James!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Joseph Jones and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Hansen misses the target.

James closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Hansen wants to get back to full guard.

James is working for a kimura but Hansen is defending it quite comfortably.

Hansen is defending against the submission attempts here by James.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hansen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

James drops back looking for a leg! Hansen is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hansen manages to kick James off! James jumps back into Hansen's guard.

James drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Hansen dives on top into guard.

We've been hearing that Hansen has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

James is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hansen defends well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

James is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hansen accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

James looking for a guillotine here but Hansen defends easily.
Hansen working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of James's head.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

James controls Hansen momentarily but Hansen frees himself.
Hansen connects with a couple of short punches.

James has his foot on Hansen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hansen works his way back into a safe position though.

James is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Hansen tries to get to full guard but James has control of the leg.
Hansen is trying to maintain the position but James is very close to passing his half guard.

James is trying to work for a kimura but Hansen is defending well.

James looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hansen is defending against the submission attempts here by James.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Marcus Hansen will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

James blocks a jab.
James steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Hansen.
Hansen thows a left - swing and a miss!
James throws a looping overhand right but Hansen ducks down to avoid it.
Hansen swings for the body but James moves out of range.
James misses with a right hand
and Hansen counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
James takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
James dives in for a single leg takedown but Hansen sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the ropes.
Hansen throws an uppercut from half a mile away. James sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Hansen throws a shot from downtown. James moves away and avoids it.
James slips a straight right by Hansen.
A slow jab from Hansen misses its intended target.
Hansen moves into range and connects with a jab.
James bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
James throws a hook to the side of Hansen's head but Hansen sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
A looping hook to the body misses from James. Hansen does a little dance to reset his feet.

James closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hansen's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

James thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Hansen looking to hit a scissor sweep but James is one step ahead there.

James drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hansen manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now James has Hansen in his guard.

James wants to sweep here but Hansen controlling him for the moment.

Marcus Hansen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Hansen is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

James is looking to control Hansen's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can James avoid being mounted?

James felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

James moves away from the strike by Hansen.
Hansen throws a hook but James avoids it easily.

James scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Hansen lands a glancing blow to the side of James's head.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Ike James seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
James is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hansen sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Hansen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

James is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Hansen is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Hansen has escaped and now he's on top!

Ike James has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Marcus Hansen.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hansen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
