The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maia tries to clinch but Champion moves out of range.
Champion lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Maia circles away quickly and effectively.
Champion ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Maia shoots in for a takedown but Champion shows good takedown defense.
Champion misses with a few strikes there.
Maia shoots in but Champion avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Champion fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Maia checks it well.
Champion tests Maia's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Maia needs to keep his hands up - Champion had a free shot at his head there.

It looks like Damien Maia has been cut.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Champion misses with a takedown attempt

and Maia counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Maia wants to free his trapped foot but Champion is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Maia is trying to control the action in half guard but Champion is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Champion looks like he's trying to stand up.

Champion has one foot on Maia's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

A left and a right from Champion both land. Nice combination.

Champion feints and then cracks Maia's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Maia down.

and Maia counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Champion's guard now.

Champion has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Champion pushes Maia off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Champion darts in and clinches Maia up against the cage.

Champion connects with a jab and follows up with a big overhand right! Oh that's hurt Maia! He's out on his feet! Champion rushes in and drops Maia with another big right hand, forcing the referee to stop the fight!
