PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight kickboxing rules bout between Bob Sapp (ranked 4006 p4p, 3961 weight class) and Kong Wu (ranked 422 p4p, 421 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Kong Wu was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kong Wu!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wu tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sapp swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Wu closes the distance and pushes Sapp back into the ropes.
Wu wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Sapp has him pressed against the ropes.
Wu dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the ropes.
Sapp is trying to maintain a safe position but Wu gets an underhook and turns Sapp into the ropes.
Wu avoids the elbow strike from Sapp, against the ropes.
Wu lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Sapp backwards.
Sapp avoids a wild elbow strike from Wu.

Sapp's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Sapp slips a jab from Wu.
Sapp tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Wu paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Sapp tries to clinch but Wu is having none of it.
Wu throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Sapp on the side of the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Wu holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Sapp is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Sapp breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Wu rushes Sapp and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Wu's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Sapp effectively controlling the action here.
Sapp misses with a punch on the inside.

Sapp manages to break the clinch.

Wu drives through and clinches with Sapp against the ropes.
Wu tries to break the clinch but Sapp is controlling the position.
With the fighters clinched against the ropes, Sapp creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Wu has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Sapp misses with a punch on the inside.
Wu is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the ropes.
Wu is looking to control Sapp's arms but Sapp gets an underhook and turns him. Now Wu has his back to the ropes.
Wu is trying to break the clinch but Sapp has him pressed against the ropes.

Sapp's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Sapp takes a swing at Wu's ribcage but misses.

Sapp tries to land knees in the clinch but Wu avoids the damage to the body.

Good anti-grappling being displayed by Sapp as Wu tries to tie him up.
Sapp lands with a right to the head.
Wu blocks a body shot from Sapp.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Sapp.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

I was talking to Sapp's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Sapp has Wu pressed against the ropes, preventing Wu from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Wu stalls.
Sapp is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Kong Wu dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Sapp is pinned up against the ropes taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Wu scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Sapp doesn't seem bothered though.
Wu misses with a jab, cross combination.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sapp tries to clinch up but Wu circles away and keeps his distance.
Wu comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Wu lands with a left to the head.
Wu misses with an elbow over the top.
Sapp tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Wu's elbow.
Sapp blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Kong Wu showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!

and Wu counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Sapp takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Wu throws a right hand that Sapp ducks under and follows up with a left that Sapp also avoids with ease.

Wu goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Wu tries to stall but Sapp uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Sapp with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Sapp breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Sapp tries to clinch but Wu is having none of it.
Sapp is looking to clinch.
Wu throws a head kick that misses.
Sapp takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Sapp avoids the head kick by Wu.

Kong Wu seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Wu wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Wu tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Sapp avoids it.

Wu lunges at Sapp with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Sapp's hand.
Sapp throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Sapp tries to close the distance and clinch but Wu swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sapp wants to clinch up but Wu keeps it at a distance.
Kong Wu seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Wu closes the distance and clinches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sapp dodges an elbow strike from Wu.
Wu blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Sapp manages to break the clinch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

I would just about give that final round to Kong Wu.
Well Wu has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
