PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Justin Kulina (ranked 2016 p4p, 1699 weight class) and Eric Brooks (ranked 263 p4p, 220 weight class). Kulina kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Tool - Schism. The key to victory for Justin Kulina has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Justin Kulina!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Eric Brooks!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Steven Brown and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brooks looks to score with a jab to the body but Kulina is just out of range.
Nice sprawl there from Brooks as Kulina shoots in.
Kulina ducks under a wild hook from Brooks.
Brooks throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Kulina connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
A lazy left from Kulina finds it's target.

Brooks buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

and Kulina counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Brooks pushes Kulina away with a front kick.

Kulina gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Kulina tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Brooks smiles and moves away.

Kulina forces Brooks back against the cage and clinches.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Brooks throws a knee to the head but misses.

Kulina lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Brooks swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Kulina lands with a short shot to the head.
Brooks misses with a short punch on the inside.

Brooks has clasped his hands together around Kulina's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Brooks creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Kulina sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Brooks tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kulina is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kulina can't do much from the bottom here.
Brooks is putting a hurting on Kulina here, landing some big shots from side control.
Brooks trying to control the position but Kulina is working away.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kulina is trying to control Brooks's posture but Brooks avoids it.
You can see the frustration on Kulina's face as Brooks controls the position.
Let's hope that Brooks has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Brooks misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Kulina is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Kulina shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Brooks but Brooks pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Justin Kulina. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kulina tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Brooks defends well and Kulina ends up having to push Brooks into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Kulina has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Brooks avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Brooks throws a punch but it's blocked by Kulina.
Kulina has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Brooks after a bit of a struggle.

Kulina tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Brooks misses with a hook to the ribs.
Kulina can't find room to land a body shot as Brooks controls the action.

Brooks has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kulina can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Brooks has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Kulina drives through and clinches with Brooks against the cage.
Brooks lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
A frustrated look appears on Kulina's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Brooks's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Kulina moves out of range of the leg kick from Brooks.
A low kick lands for Brooks.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Brooks swats away the attempt to clinch by Kulina.

Kulina changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Brooks tries to avoid it but Kulina manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Brooks to the ground. Brooks escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
A nice inside leg kick there by Brooks. That's going to slow Kulina down.
Brooks lands a leg kick that knocks Kulina off balance momentarily.
Brooks lands a nice leg kick that just misses Kulina's sensitive parts.
Brooks moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Brooks is doing well to control the position and prevent Kulina from advancing to side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Brooks has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kulina is working away from the top position though.

Kulina looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Kulina lands a nice short elbow.
Brooks wants to control but Kulina is keeping busy.
Brooks might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kulina haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Kulina seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Brooks does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Brooks throws a sloppy strike from the bottom. He's now off balance and Kulina manages to pass to side control.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Brooks is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Kulina is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Brooks will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Kulina decides to stand back up. Kulina steps back and let's Brooks get back to his feet.

Kulina tries for a takedown but Brooks sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Kulina lands a nice looking kick to the body. Brooks takes a step back to recover.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Eric Brooks showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Brooks tries to pull guard but Kulina holds him up against the cage and eventually Brooks drops back down to his feet.
Brooks blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kulina is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Brooks lands with a short shot to the head.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Brooks creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Come on Kulina - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Eric Brooks seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Brooks breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Brooks misses with a wild combination.

Kulina throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Brooks was covering up waiting for the punch and Kulina finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Brooks wants to sweep here but Kulina controlling him for the moment.

Brooks is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Brooks leaves Kulina with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Kulina shoots for a double leg takedown but Brooks sprawls well. He's pushed Kulina's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Brooks thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Kulina if he has to take too many more of those.

Kulina shoots in for a takedown but Brooks shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Brooks escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Brooks.
Kulina ducks right into an uppercut from Brooks.
Brooks lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Brooks steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Kulina.
Eric Brooks is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Oh Kulina is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Brooks looks for a left high kick but can't connect. Brooks backs up to catch a breather... no he lunges forward with a huge flying knee that smacks Kulina's temple! It sends Kulina violently to the canvas! The crowd goes nuts as Brooks celebrates and the doctors try to help Kulina!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:37 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Flying Knee). Eric Brooks!
